🔧 Alternator - Replacement

The alternator on your Tacoma charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. If the battery light is on, voltage is low, or the bearing is noisy, replacing the alternator is the fix.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting. This prevents shorts and accidental engine cranking.
  • The alternator and belt drive are close to moving parts. Keep hands, sleeves, and tools clear.
  • Let the engine cool before working near the belt and accessory drive.
  • Use caution around the battery area. A dropped tool can create sparks.
  • If the serpentine belt is removed, note the routing carefully before reinstalling.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench.
  • If the belt looks cracked, glazed, or oily, replace it while you are in there.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the post.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • If equipped, lift off the engine cover by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake hose clamp.
  • Remove any intake duct or snorkel pieces blocking access to the alternator.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to unload the belt.
  • Take a photo of the belt path first.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.

Step 4: Remove the alternator electrical connectors

  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver to release the connector lock.
  • Disconnect the main charging cable and the plug from the alternator.
  • Keep the cable from touching metal.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper and lower alternator bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • If the alternator is stuck, wiggle it gently free from the bracket.

Step 6: Remove the alternator

  • Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
  • Compare the old and new units to make sure the mounting points and pulley match.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator in the bracket.
  • Install the mounting bolts by hand first using a 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the wiring

  • Reconnect the main charging cable and tighten the nut with a 12mm socket.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the alternator plug until it clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt exactly as it was before.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last.
  • Inspect every pulley groove to make sure the belt is fully seated.

Step 10: Reinstall intake parts and reconnect battery

  • Reinstall the intake duct and tighten the clamp with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reinstall any engine cover.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or pulley noise.
  • Check that the battery warning light is off.
  • Use a voltmeter at the battery. Charging voltage should usually be about 13.5-14.8 volts with the engine running.
  • Recheck all fasteners after a short test drive.
