🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover
- Use your hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward from its rubber mounts.
- Set the cover aside in a safe place.
- Pull evenly, not at an angle.
Step 2: Remove Intake Ducting for Access
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the air intake hose clamp near the throttle body.
- Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamps attached to the intake duct.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim clip removal tool to release plastic clips holding the duct in place.
- Lift the intake duct out of the engine bay and set it aside.
- Do not drop debris into the intake opening.
Step 3: Note the Serpentine Belt Routing
- Use a work light to look at the belt path around the pulleys.
- Compare it to your photo before removing the belt.
- The serpentine belt is the single long rubber belt that drives the alternator, A/C compressor, and other accessories.
Step 4: Release Belt Tension
- Place the serpentine belt tensioner tool or 17mm socket and ratchet on the belt tensioner hex.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley while holding the tensioner back.
- Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.
- If replacing the belt, remove it fully from all pulleys.
Step 5: Disconnect Alternator Wiring
- Use a 10mm socket to confirm the negative battery cable is disconnected before touching the alternator wiring.
- Press the lock tab on the alternator electrical connector and unplug it by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut from the alternator power wire terminal.
- Lift the power wire off the stud and move it aside.
- The power wire terminal is the main charging connection between the alternator and battery.
Step 6: Remove Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket, depending on bolt position, to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
- Rock the alternator gently by hand to free it from the bracket.
- If it feels stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully as a pry tool at the mounting ear only.
- Do not pry on the pulley.
Step 7: Remove the Alternator from the Engine Bay
- Lift the alternator upward and out through the open space created by removing the intake duct.
- Use both hands. The alternator is heavier than it looks.
- Compare the old and new alternators on the bench before installation.
- Make sure the pulley, electrical connector, mounting ears, and power terminal are in the same positions.
Step 8: Install the New Alternator
- Lower the new alternator into position by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect Alternator Wiring
- Push the alternator electrical connector into place until it clicks.
- Install the alternator power wire onto the terminal stud.
- Use a 10mm socket to install the power terminal nut.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the power terminal nut to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Make sure the rubber protective boot fully covers the terminal.
Step 10: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the serpentine belt around the lower pulleys first, following your photo.
- Leave the alternator pulley for last because it is easiest to reach.
- Use the serpentine belt tensioner tool or 17mm socket and ratchet to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slide the belt over the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Use a work light to check that the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.
- One rib off can destroy the belt.
Step 11: Reinstall Intake Ducting
- Set the intake duct back into position by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the hose clamp at the throttle body.
- Use needle-nose pliers to reconnect any small hose clamps.
- Use a trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall plastic clips.
- Make sure the duct is fully seated and not loose.
Step 12: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Line up the engine cover with the rubber mounts.
- Press straight down by hand until the cover snaps into place.
Step 13: Reconnect the Battery
- Apply battery terminal anti-corrosion protectant to the terminal if needed.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the battery terminal nut snugly.
- Do not overtighten; the terminal only needs to be secure and unable to twist by hand.
