- ๐ก A serpentine-belt tool is a long, low-profile handle used to rotate the spring-loaded belt tensioner in tight spaces.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery on the driver side of the engine compartment.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative-terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before disconnecting alternator wiring.
Step 2: Raise and support the front corner
- Use a 21mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen the passenger-side front wheel nuts approximately one-half turn.
- Position the hydraulic floor jack beneath the specified front jacking point and lift the vehicle.
- Place a jack stand beneath the passenger-side front support point. Lower the vehicle carefully onto the stand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket to remove the wheel nuts and wheel.
Step 3: Remove the wheel-well splash shields
- Use a trim-clip removal tool and flat-tip screwdriver to release the passenger-side inner-fender and lower splash-shield clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any shield screws.
- Remove or fold back the shields until the alternator and belt area are accessible.
- Keep the clips organized by location. Replace clips that crack or no longer lock.
Step 4: Release and remove the drive belt
- Compare the belt routing with your photograph or the underhood routing label.
- Fit the serpentine-belt tool with 14mm socket onto the automatic tensioner hex.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly to remove belt tension. Slip the belt from the alternator pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly. Remove the belt if it is being replaced; otherwise secure it away from the work area.
- Inspect the tensioner and idler pulleys by hand. They should rotate smoothly without grinding, looseness, or wobble.
- Never let the tensioner snap back.
Step 5: Disconnect the alternator wiring
- Use a work light to identify the small regulator connector and the larger B+ output cable on the rear of the alternator.
- Press the locking tab and unplug the regulator connector by its plastic housing. Use needle-nose pliers only if the tab cannot be reached by hand.
- Open the rubber cap over the B+ terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut, then lift the cable eyelet from the stud.
- Use a 10mm or 12mm socket, as fitted, to release the wiring-harness bracket from the alternator.
- Keep the cable away from metal parts even though the battery is disconnected.
Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand before removing the final fastener.
- Use a 14mm socket, extension, universal joint, and ratchet to loosen the upper alternator mounting bolt.
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet through the wheel-well opening to remove the lower mounting bolt.
- Remove the upper bolt and any fitted alternator brace hardware with the appropriate listed socket.
- Record each bolt's location because the bolts may have different lengths.
Step 7: Extract the old alternator
- Rock the alternator gently by hand to release it from the mounting bracket.
- If it is tight, use the handle of the flat-tip screwdriver to tap the housing lightly. Do not pry against the pulley, radiator, or aluminum engine covers.
- Rotate the alternator until its pulley clears the surrounding brackets, then lower it through the passenger-side wheel-well opening.
- Do not force the alternator against an air-conditioning line. Reposition it until a clear path is available.
Step 8: Compare and install the replacement alternator
- Place both alternators side by side. Confirm matching mounting ears, pulley grooves, electrical connector, output stud, and housing clearance.
- Guide the replacement alternator upward through the wheel-well opening.
- Align the mounting ears and install all bolts by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the primary alternator mounting bolts to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
- If a smaller 12mm-head wiring or support-bracket bolt was removed, use a 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten it to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Start every aluminum-threaded bolt by hand.
Step 9: Reconnect the alternator wiring
- Place the B+ cable eyelet squarely over the alternator output stud.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the B+ terminal nut to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Close the rubber terminal cap completely.
- Push the regulator connector into place until its lock clicks.
- Secure the harness bracket with the appropriate 10mm or 12mm socket. Ensure the harness cannot touch the belt or pulley.
Step 10: Install the drive belt
- Route the belt around every pulley according to the underhood diagram, leaving the alternator pulley until last.
- Use the serpentine-belt tool with 14mm socket to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Use the work light to confirm every belt rib sits fully inside every pulley groove.
- Turn the crankshaft only if needed with a 17mm socket and breaker bar in the normal clockwise direction. Recheck belt alignment afterward.
Step 11: Reinstall the splash shields and wheel
- Position the splash shields and use the trim-clip removal tool by hand to install serviceable clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the shield screws. Tighten them snugly without crushing the plastic.
- Install the wheel and start all five wheel nuts by hand.
- Raise your Sienna with the hydraulic floor jack, remove the jack stand, and lower the tire to the ground.
- Use a 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Reconnect the battery
- Place the negative battery clamp fully onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the clamp to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Confirm the clamp cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten it.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Before starting the engine, make one final visual check that tools are removed and the belt is correctly seated.
- ๐ Start the engine and listen for squealing, grinding, knocking, or belt slapping. Shut it off immediately if the belt runs off-center.
- ๐ก Confirm the charging-system warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- โก With the engine running, charging voltage will commonly be approximately 13.5-14.8 volts, although Toyota's computer-controlled charging strategy can vary voltage with operating conditions.
- ๐ช Initialize each automatic window if needed: close it fully, hold the switch up for about one second, lower it fully, then raise it fully again.
- ๐ช Verify both power sliding doors and the power liftgate operate normally. Cycle them manually or with their switches if initialization was lost.
- ๐ Recheck wheel-nut torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
- ๐งพ If the battery warning remains on, test the battery and charging circuit before assuming the replacement alternator is defective.
