📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Fit on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • If raising the vehicle, use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and support it with jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • A serpentine belt is the long rubber belt that turns the alternator, A/C compressor, and other pulleys.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot touch the battery again.
  • Always remove negative first.

Step 2: Raise the Front of the Vehicle

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield Access Fasteners

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic clips from the lower splash shield area near the passenger side.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove any 10mm splash shield bolts needed for access.
  • Move the splash shield down enough to access the belt and lower alternator area.
  • A splash shield is the plastic panel under the engine that blocks water and road debris.

Step 4: Note the Belt Routing

  • Look at how the serpentine belt wraps around the pulleys before removing it.
  • Use your phone to take a clear picture of the belt routing.
  • This helps you install the new serpentine drive belt correctly later.
  • A quick photo prevents confusion.

Step 5: Release Belt Tension

  • Place a 17mm box-end wrench or breaker bar 3/8-inch on the drive belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • A tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • While holding the tensioner released, slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.

Step 6: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Pull the belt off the remaining pulleys by hand.
  • Compare the old belt with the new serpentine drive belt to confirm the length and rib count match.
  • Do not reuse a cracked, glazed, or oil-soaked belt.

Step 7: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connectors

  • Locate the alternator on the front/passenger side of the engine.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver gently if needed to release the locking tab on the alternator electrical plug.
  • Pull the electrical plug straight out by the connector body, not by the wires.
  • Lift the rubber protective boot from the alternator power cable terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension to remove the alternator power cable nut.
  • Move the cable aside where it cannot touch metal.

Step 8: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing the final bolt.
  • If a bolt is tight, use a breaker bar 3/8-inch for controlled extra leverage.
  • Keep the bolts organized so they go back in the same locations.

Step 9: Remove the Old Alternator

  • Work the alternator out of its bracket by hand.
  • If it is stuck in the bracket, gently rock it side to side.
  • Do not pry against the aluminum engine bracket with heavy force.
  • Remove the alternator through the best available opening from the top or lower passenger-side access area.

Step 10: Install the New Alternator

  • Place the new alternator into the mounting bracket.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and torque wrench 3/8-inch to tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)

Step 11: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Install the alternator power cable onto the alternator terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch to tighten the power cable nut.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
  • Push the rubber protective boot fully over the terminal.
  • Plug in the alternator electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 12: Install the New Serpentine Belt

  • Route the new serpentine drive belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Leave the alternator pulley for last if that gives the easiest access.
  • Use a 17mm box-end wrench or breaker bar 3/8-inch to rotate the tensioner and create slack.
  • Slide the belt onto the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs are seated correctly in every pulley groove.
  • Misaligned belts can shred quickly.

Step 13: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Lift the lower splash shield back into position.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall the plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall any splash shield bolts.
  • Snug the 10mm bolts by hand; do not overtighten plastic panel hardware.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 15: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and torque wrench 3/8-inch to tighten the terminal nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Make sure the clamp does not twist by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Fit and listen for belt squeal, rubbing, or grinding noises.
  • Confirm the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
  • Let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes and recheck that the belt is tracking straight on all pulleys.
  • Turn on headlights, blower motor, and rear defroster. The engine should continue running smoothly.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • Recycle or return the old alternator if it has a core charge.
