Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

- Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion if the terminal is dirty.
- Negative cable comes off first.
Step 2: Remove Intake Ducting for Access
- Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air intake tube clamps.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to release any plastic retainers holding the intake duct or engine cover area.
- Move the intake tube out of the way carefully without pulling on attached hoses or wiring.
- Do not force plastic parts.
Step 3: Note the Belt Routing
- Use your phone to take a photo of the serpentine belt path around every pulley.
- Look for a belt routing label under the hood. If present, compare it to your photo.
- The smooth side of the belt rides on smooth pulleys, and the ribbed side rides in grooved pulleys.
Step 4: Release Serpentine Belt Tension
- Install the serpentine belt tool or 1/2-inch drive breaker bar into the belt tensioner drive opening.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley while holding the tensioner released.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.

Step 5: Unplug the Alternator Connector

Step 10: Reconnect Alternator Wiring

- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to install the retaining nut.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the output stud nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
- Push the rubber protective boot fully over the power stud.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal only.
- Push the electrical connector into the alternator until it clicks.
Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo or the under-hood routing label.
- Leave the alternator pulley for last because it is usually easiest to access.
- Use the serpentine belt tool or 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs are fully seated in every grooved pulley.
- One rib off can shred the belt.
Step 12: Reinstall Intake Ducting
- Place the intake duct back into position.
- Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake tube clamps.
- Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall any plastic retainers.
- Make sure no tools are left near the belt or fan area.
Step 13: Reconnect the Battery
- Install the negative battery cable onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the clamp.
- Use a torque wrench if possible and tighten the battery terminal clamp to Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Apply battery terminal protector spray after the clamp is tight.
Step 14: Verify Charging System Operation

- Touch the red probe to battery positive and black probe to battery negative.
