Step 1: Disconnect Battery Power

- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside.
- If removing the positive cable for extra room, use a 10mm socket and remove it only after the negative cable is disconnected.
- Negative cable comes off first.

Step 5: Disconnect Alternator Wiring
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully to lift the rubber protective boot from the alternator output terminal.
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the alternator output terminal nut.
- Move the large charge cable away from the alternator.
- Press the locking tab on the alternator electrical connector and unplug it by hand.
- Do not pull on the wires; pull on the connector body.
Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand so it does not drop when the bolts come out.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.

Step 8: Install the New Alternator

- Use a 14mm socket to snug the mounting bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench with a 14mm socket and tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect Alternator Wiring
- Push the alternator electrical connector in by hand until it clicks.
- Install the large charge cable onto the output terminal.
- Use a torque wrench with a 13mm socket and tighten the output terminal nut to Torque to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo or the under-hood belt routing label.
- Leave the alternator pulley for last.
- Use a 19mm socket with a 1/2-inch breaker bar or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs are seated correctly in every grooved pulley.
- One rib off can shred the belt.
Step 11: Reinstall Intake Ducting
- Set the intake duct back into place by hand.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the air intake tube clamps.
- Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall any plastic retainers.
- Reinstall the engine cover by hand, or use a 10mm socket if retaining bolts were removed.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- If the positive cable was removed, install it first and use a 10mm socket to tighten the clamp.
- Install the negative battery cable last.
- Use a 10mm socket and tighten the battery terminal clamp to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Apply battery terminal protectant to help prevent corrosion.
Step 13: Verify Charging System Operation
- Use a digital multimeter set to DC volts.
- Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery post and the black meter lead to the negative battery post.
- With the engine off, a healthy charged battery should read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
- Start the engine and check voltage again.
- With the engine running, charging voltage should typically read about 13.5-14.8 volts.
- Turn on headlights and A/C, then confirm the voltage stays stable above about 13.2 volts.
