Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover or Intake Duct if Needed

- Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen any hose clamp if the air duct needs to be moved.
- Set the duct and clips aside in order.
- Take photos before removing parts.
Step 2: Relieve Serpentine Belt Tension
- Locate the belt tensioner on the front of the engine.
- Place a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar on the tensioner pulley bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise to loosen the belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley while holding the tensioner back.
- Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.
- If replacing the belt, remove it fully from the remaining pulleys.
Step 3: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connectors
- Use a flathead screwdriver gently if needed to release the small alternator plug lock tab.
- Pull the electrical connector straight out by the connector body, not by the wires.
- Open the rubber protective cover on the alternator battery cable terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut from the alternator output terminal.
- Lift the battery cable off the stud and move it aside.
- Torque on installation: alternator output terminal nut to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
Step 4: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand while removing the final bolt.
- Wiggle the alternator gently out of its bracket.
- If it is stuck, rock it by hand. Do not hammer the housing.
- Aluminum brackets can crack easily.
Step 5: Compare the New Alternator
- Place the old and new alternators side by side.
- Confirm the pulley style, mounting ears, electrical plug shape, and battery cable stud location match.
- Spin the new pulley by hand. It should turn smoothly with no grinding.
Step 6: Install the New Alternator
- Position the new alternator into the bracket by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the bolt is going in crooked and damaging the threads.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb to tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
- Torque to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs)
Step 7: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Push the small electrical connector into the alternator until it clicks.
- Place the battery cable eyelet onto the alternator output stud.
- Install the terminal nut using a 10mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb carefully at low setting if compatible.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
- Close the rubber protective cover fully over the terminal.
Step 8: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo or the under-hood belt routing label.
- Leave the alternator pulley for last.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit squarely in every grooved pulley.
- One rib off can shred the belt.
Step 9: Reinstall Intake Duct or Covers
- Reinstall any removed intake duct parts using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten hose clamps using a flathead screwdriver.
- Reinstall clips using your hands or a trim clip removal tool to guide them into place.
Step 10: Reconnect the Battery
- Clean the battery terminal with a battery terminal brush if corrosion is present.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the battery terminal clamp.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Apply battery terminal protectant after tightening.
Step 11: Test Charging Voltage
- Set a digital multimeter to DC volts.
- Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery post and the black meter lead to the negative battery post.
- With the engine off, a healthy battery should usually read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
- Start the engine and check voltage again.
- With the engine running, the charging voltage should usually be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
- Turn on headlights and blower fan, then confirm voltage stays stable above about 13.2 volts.
