📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Remove Access Covers

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips from any upper radiator cover or intake duct blocking access.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove small bolts from the intake snorkel or plastic cover pieces if they are in the way.
  • Set clips and bolts in a cup or tray so nothing gets lost.
  • Photos help during reassembly.

Step 2: Record the Belt Path

  • Use your phone or a flashlight to clearly view the serpentine belt path.
  • Check the belt routing label under the hood if equipped.
  • Confirm which side of the belt touches each pulley: ribbed side to grooved pulleys, smooth side to smooth pulleys.

Step 3: Release the Serpentine Belt Tension

  • Place the serpentine belt tool or 1/2-inch drive ratchet onto the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to loosen the belt.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first.
  • Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.
  • If installing a new belt, remove the belt completely from all pulleys.

Step 4: Disconnect the Alternator Plug

  • Find the small electrical connector on the alternator.
  • Use your finger or a flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector locking tab.
  • Pull the connector straight off by the plastic body, not the wires.
  • If stuck, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body.

Step 5: Remove the Alternator Main Power Cable

  • Lift the rubber boot from the alternator power terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to remove the terminal nut.
  • Move the power cable away from the alternator.
  • Do not bend the cable sharply or let it get trapped behind the alternator.

Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to loosen the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Rock the alternator gently by hand to free it from the bracket.
  • Do not pry hard against aluminum brackets.
  • Gentle rocking works better than force.

Step 7: Compare the New Alternator

  • Place the old and new alternators side by side.
  • Check that the mounting ears, pulley, electrical plug, and power stud are in the same locations.
  • Spin the new pulley by hand. It should feel smooth and quiet.

Step 8: Install the New Alternator

  • Set the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
  • Start each mounting bolt by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading, which means the bolt is going in crooked.
  • Use a 14mm socket to snug the mounting bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 10-100 Nm to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Place the main power cable onto the alternator stud.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to install and tighten the power terminal nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber boot fully over the terminal.
  • Plug in the small alternator connector until it clicks.
  • A click means it locked.

Step 10: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around the lower pulleys first, following your photo or the under-hood routing label.
  • Leave the alternator pulley for last because it is easy to reach from the top.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool or 1/2-inch drive ratchet to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect every pulley. The belt ribs must sit fully in the grooves.

Step 11: Reinstall Removed Covers

  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any intake duct or cover bolts.
  • Use your hands and a trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic clips.
  • Check the engine bay for tools, bolts, rags, or loose wiring before starting the engine.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the negative battery terminal if it has white or green corrosion.
  • Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp until it does not twist by hand.

  • ✅ Start your Pilot and watch the battery warning light. It should turn off shortly after startup.
  • 🔋 Use a digital multimeter at the battery posts with the engine running. Normal charging voltage is typically about 13.5-14.8 volts.
  • 👂 Listen for belt squeal, scraping, or clicking. Shut the engine off if the belt is not tracking straight.
