Replacing the alternator on your HR-V means removing the drive belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, unbolting the alternator, and installing the new unit. The alternator keeps the battery charged while the engine runs, so a failing one can cause battery lights, dim lights, stalling, or no-start problems.

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The alternator main power wire is always hot when the battery is connected.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before working near the exhaust side and radiator area.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the serpentine belt path. The belt tensioner is spring-loaded and can snap back quickly.
  • ⚠️ If lifting the front of your HR-V, support it with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Your HR-V may need the power window auto-up function and radio/clock settings reset after the battery is disconnected.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your HR-V on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move it aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • If raising the front, use a floor jack at the front jacking point and place jack stands under the approved side support points.
  • A serpentine belt is the single ribbed belt that drives engine accessories like the alternator and A/C compressor.
  • A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the serpentine belt tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it to the side.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the terminal if needed.
  • Never skip this step.

Step 2: Raise the Front for Lower Access

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of your HR-V if you need more room underneath.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic clips from the lower engine splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove any 10mm splash shield bolts.
  • Lower the shield and set it aside.
  • Keep clips in a small cup.

Step 4: Note the Serpentine Belt Routing

  • Before removing the belt, look at how it wraps around the pulleys.
  • Use your phone to take a clear picture of the belt routing.
  • This prevents confusion during reassembly.

Step 5: Release Belt Tension

  • Place a serpentine belt tool or 14mm socket with 3/8-inch ratchet on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay if replacing it.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.

Step 6: Unplug the Alternator Connector

  • Locate the small electrical connector on the alternator.
  • Press the locking tab with your fingers or a flathead screwdriver.
  • Pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 7: Remove the Alternator Main Power Cable

  • Lift the rubber protective boot from the alternator power terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the terminal nut.
  • Move the cable away from the alternator.
  • On installation, tighten the alternator power terminal nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 8: Remove Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand so it does not drop when the bolts come out.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension set to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • If a bolt is tight, break it loose slowly. Do not round the bolt head.
  • On installation, tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Remove the Alternator

  • Work the alternator out of the bracket by hand.
  • If it is stuck in the bracket, gently wiggle it side to side while pulling upward.
  • Do not pry hard against aluminum mounting surfaces.
  • Compare the old alternator to the new alternator before installation.

Step 10: Install the New Alternator

  • Position the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, and torque wrench 10-80 Nm to tighten the mounting bolts to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
  • Start bolts by hand first.

Step 11: Reconnect Alternator Wiring

  • Place the main power cable onto the alternator terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 10-80 Nm to tighten the nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber protective boot fully over the terminal.
  • Plug in the small alternator connector until it clicks.

Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using the photo you took earlier.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool or 14mm socket with 3/8-inch ratchet to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the alternator pulley last.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check every pulley to make sure the belt ribs sit fully in the pulley grooves.

Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Raise the lower splash shield into position.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall the plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the shield bolts.
  • Tighten the small splash shield bolts snug only; do not overtighten plastic panels.

Step 14: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp securely.
  • Do not overtighten the terminal clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your HR-V and make sure the battery warning light turns off.
  • Listen for belt squeal, rubbing, or clicking. Shut the engine off immediately if the belt is not tracking straight.
  • Let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes and recheck the belt position visually.
  • If you have a voltmeter, check battery voltage with the engine running. A healthy charging system is usually around 13.5-14.8 volts.
  • Reset the driver window auto function if needed: turn ignition ON, fully lower the window, then fully raise it and hold the switch up for about 2 seconds.
  • Drive normally and confirm there are no warning lights.
