- ✅ Park your Canyon on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- ✅ Open the hood and let the engine cool completely.
- ✅ Take a clear photo of the belt routing before removal. Belt routing means the exact path the belt takes around each pulley.
- ✅ Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
- ✅ If access is tight from above, raise the front with a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum and support it with jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside.
- Always disconnect negative first.
Step 2: Remove the Intake Duct for Access
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake duct clamp at the throttle body.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the clamp at the air filter housing.
- Remove any retaining clips with a trim clip removal tool.
- Lift the intake duct out and set it aside.
Step 3: Note the Belt Routing
- Look for the belt routing diagram under the hood. It may be on the radiator support or fan shroud area.
- If the label is missing or hard to read, use your phone to take a photo before removing the belt.
- The smooth side of the belt rides on smooth pulleys. The ribbed side rides on grooved pulleys.
Step 4: Release Belt Tension
- Place the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar into the belt tensioner drive opening.
- Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first while holding the tensioner back.
- Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.
- Move slowly; the spring is strong.
Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Pull the belt out from around the pulleys by hand.
- Inspect the belt. If it has cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or oil contamination, replace it now.
- If reusing the belt, keep it oriented the same direction it was running.
Step 6: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connector
- Press the locking tab on the alternator connector by hand.
- If the tab is stuck, gently lift it with a flat-blade screwdriver and pull the connector straight off.
- Do not pull on the wires themselves.
Step 7: Remove the Alternator Battery Cable
- Pull back the rubber protective boot from the alternator output stud.
- Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the retaining nut.
- Lift the battery cable eyelet off the stud and move it aside.
- Keep the nut in a safe place if the new alternator does not include one.
Step 8: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand.
- Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- There are typically upper and lower mounting bolts securing the alternator to the bracket.
- Once the bolts are out, wiggle the alternator free from the bracket.
Step 9: Compare the New Alternator
- Place the old and new alternators side by side.
- Check that the pulley style, electrical connector, mounting ears, and output stud location match.
- If a pulley cover or shipping plug is installed, remove it by hand before installation.
Step 10: Install the New Alternator
- Set the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
- Start all alternator mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the bolt starts crooked and damages the threads.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the mounting bolts.
- Use a torque wrench, 10-100 ft-lb range and 15mm socket to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Alternator Battery Cable
- Place the battery cable eyelet onto the alternator output stud.
- Install the retaining nut by hand first.
- Use a torque wrench, 10-100 ft-lb range and 13mm socket to tighten the alternator output nut to Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Push the rubber protective boot fully back over the stud.
Step 12: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the alternator electrical connector in by hand until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector to confirm it is locked.
Step 13: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt around all pulleys except the alternator pulley, following your photo or the under-hood diagram.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and relieve tension.
- Slide the belt over the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs are seated correctly in every grooved pulley.
- One rib off can shred the belt.
Step 14: Reinstall the Intake Duct
- Set the intake duct back into position by hand.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake duct clamps.
- Reinstall any retainers using the trim clip removal tool if needed.
Step 15: Reconnect the Battery
- Apply a light coat of battery terminal protectant to the battery post if available.
- Place the negative battery cable back on the negative post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal. It can crack.
Step 16: Verify Charging Voltage
- Set a digital multimeter to DC volts. A multimeter measures electrical voltage, resistance, and continuity.
- Touch the red lead to the positive battery post and the black lead to the negative battery post.
- Before starting, a healthy charged battery should read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
- Start the engine and check voltage again with the digital multimeter.
- With the engine running, charging voltage should usually be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Watch the belt for 30 seconds with the engine idling. It should run smoothly without wobbling or walking off a pulley.
- ✅ Turn on headlights, blower motor, and rear defogger, then recheck charging voltage with the digital multimeter.
- ✅ Confirm the battery warning light is off.
- ✅ Shut the engine off and recheck the alternator wiring boot and connector.
- ✅ Some power windows, clock, and radio presets may need to be reset after battery disconnection.
- ✅ If the battery was deeply discharged, fully charge it with a battery charger. A new alternator should not be used as a battery charger.
