Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
  • Wait at least one minute before working on the alternator wiring.

Step 2: Record the Belt Routing

  • Use the work light to identify the belt path around the crankshaft pulley, alternator, tensioner, and remaining accessories.
  • Take a clear picture before releasing the belt.
  • The tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that automatically keeps the belt tight.

Step 3: Release the Drive-Belt Tension

  • Place the 17mm socket with the breaker bar or serpentine-belt removal tool on the tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly against spring pressure until the belt becomes loose.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly return the tensioner to its resting position.
  • Do not allow the tensioner to snap back.
  • Leave the belt routed around lower pulleys.

Step 4: Inspect the Drive Belt

  • Use the work light to inspect both sides of the belt.
  • Replace the belt if it has missing ribs, edge damage, heavy glazing, oil contamination, or cracks across several ribs.

Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to lift the protective rubber cap from the alternator output terminal.
  • Press the locking tab and unplug the small alternator control connector by its plastic housing. Do not pull on its wires.
  • Use the 12mm socket and ratchet to remove the nut from the large output terminal.
  • Lift the cable terminal from the stud and move it aside without bending it sharply.
  • Keep the terminal nut and insulating pieces in their original order.

Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand before removing the final bolt.
  • Use the 14mm socket, ratchet, and extension to loosen the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts.
  • Remove both mounting bolts and note their original positions if their lengths differ.
  • Rock the alternator gently to free it from the mounting bracket. Do not pry against wiring, hoses, or aluminum sealing surfaces.

Step 7: Remove the Alternator

  • Use both hands to guide the alternator upward through the available space.
  • Turn the alternator as needed so the pulley and terminal stud clear nearby hoses and wiring.
  • Do not force it against the radiator or air-conditioning lines.

Step 8: Compare the Replacement Alternator

  • Place the old and replacement alternators side by side.
  • Confirm that the pulley diameter and grooves, electrical connector, output-terminal position, mounting ears, and bolt holes match.
  • Spin the replacement pulley by hand. It should rotate smoothly without scraping or excessive looseness.

Step 9: Install the Replacement Alternator

  • Lower the replacement alternator into its bracket using both hands.
  • Align the mounting ears and start both bolts by hand. Each bolt should turn several complete rotations without resistance.
  • Use the 14mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use the 10-80 Nm torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start bolts to prevent damaged threads.

Step 10: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Place the large output cable squarely over the alternator terminal stud.
  • Install the nut with the 12mm socket.
  • Use the 5-25 Nm torque wrench to tighten the output-terminal nut to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the terminal; the insulated stud can break or rotate internally.
  • Push the protective cap fully over the terminal.
  • Reconnect the small control connector until its lock clicks.

Step 11: Reinstall the Drive Belt

  • Route the belt according to your photograph or the under-hood routing label.
  • Make sure every rib sits inside the matching pulley grooves.
  • Use the 17mm socket and breaker bar or serpentine-belt removal tool to rotate the tensioner against spring pressure.
  • Slide the belt over the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Use the work light to inspect every pulley. The belt must not hang over any pulley edge.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative cable fully onto the negative battery post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 5-25 Nm torque wrench to tighten the terminal clamp to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Confirm the clamp cannot be rotated by hand. Do not overtighten it.

Step 13: Perform an Initial Inspection

  • Remove all tools from the engine compartment.
  • Use the work light to verify that the alternator connectors are secure and the belt is correctly seated.
  • Stand clear of the belt before starting the engine.

โœ… After Repair

  • ๐Ÿš— Start the engine and observe the belt from a safe distance. Shut the engine off immediately if the belt wanders, squeals continuously, or runs off-center.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Confirm that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Set the digital multimeter to DC volts and measure across the battery posts. Charging voltage will normally be approximately 13.5-14.8 volts, depending on battery condition, electrical load, and Hyundaiโ€™s charging strategy.
  • โšก Turn on the headlights and blower motor. Confirm that the battery warning light remains off and the engine continues running normally.
