๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ ฟ๏ธ Park your CR-V on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and open the hood.
- ๐ฑ Save the radio presets and clock settings if desired.
- ๐ท Photograph the drive-belt routing before removing it. The drive belt, also called a serpentine belt, powers several accessories with one continuous belt.
- ๐ Inspect the belt for cracks, frayed edges, shiny glazing, or oil contamination. Replace it separately if damaged.
- ๐ Wait at least three minutes after switching off the ignition before disconnecting the battery.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on the safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Do not disconnect the positive terminal unless additional working clearance is required.
Step 2: Remove the Intake Air Duct
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to release the retaining clips from the intake-air duct above the radiator support.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only where needed to lift the center pins without breaking them.
- Lift the duct out and store its clips in the magnetic parts tray.
- Pull clips straight upward to prevent breakage.
Step 3: Record the Belt Routing
- Compare the installed drive belt with the routing label under the hood.
- If the label is missing, use a phone to photograph how the belt passes around every pulley.
- Make sure the picture clearly shows which side of the belt contacts each pulley.
Step 4: Release the Drive-Belt Tension
- The automatic tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the drive belt tight.
- Fit a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar, or the serpentine belt tool, onto the tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly in the belt-release direction until the belt becomes loose. Do not force it beyond its stop.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley while holding the tensioner.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Never let it snap back.
- Leave the belt positioned around the remaining pulleys if possible.
Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the locking tab on the alternator electrical connector, then unplug it by holding the connector body.
- Pull back the rubber protective cap from the alternator output terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the output-terminal nut.
- Lift the charging cable from the terminal and move it aside without sharply bending it.
- Store the nut in the magnetic parts tray.
Step 6: Remove the Alternator Bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand because it can move when the final bolt is removed.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the upper alternator mounting bolt.
- Use the same 14mm socket and ratchet to loosen and remove the lower mounting bolt.
- Remove the upper mounting bolt, then place both bolts in the magnetic parts tray.
- Keep track of each boltโs original location because the lengths may differ.
Step 7: Remove the Old Alternator
- Rock the alternator gently by hand to release it from the mounting bracket.
- Lift and rotate the alternator through the available opening without pulling on hoses or wiring.
- Do not pry against plastic engine parts.
- Compare the old and replacement alternators. Confirm that the pulley, mounting ears, electrical connector, and output terminal match.
Step 8: Install the Replacement Alternator
- Lower the replacement alternator into the bracket by hand.
- Align the mounting holes and start both bolts by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to seat the bolts lightly.
- Use the torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the upper mounting bolt to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
- Use the torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the lower mounting bolt to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
- Always start mounting bolts by hand.
Step 9: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Place the charging cable squarely over the output terminal.
- Install the output-terminal nut by hand, then use the torque wrench and 12mm socket to tighten it to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the nut because the insulated terminal can crack or rotate.
- Push the rubber protective cap fully over the terminal.
- Reconnect the electrical plug by hand until its locking tab clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall the Drive Belt
- Route the belt according to the under-hood diagram or the photograph taken earlier.
- Confirm that every belt rib is centered in the matching grooves on each grooved pulley.
- Use the 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar, or the serpentine belt tool, to rotate the tensioner slowly.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Inspect every pulley again. A belt sitting one groove off can be damaged immediately after startup.
Step 11: Reinstall the Intake Air Duct
- Position the intake-air duct over its mounting points.
- Install the retaining clips by hand, then press their center pins flush.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool only if a clip needs slight alignment.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable fully onto the negative post.
- Use the torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten the terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Confirm that the terminal cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten it.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Before starting the engine, verify that no tools remain in the engine compartment and that the belt is correctly seated.
- ๐ Start the engine and observe the belt from a safe distance. Shut the engine off immediately if the belt wanders, squeals continuously, or appears misaligned.
- ๐ Check that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- ๐ Set the digital multimeter to 20 volts DC. With the engine idling, place the red probe on the positive battery terminal and the black probe on the negative terminal.
- โก Charging voltage will commonly be approximately 13.5-14.8 volts, but Hondaโs computer-controlled charging system can temporarily command a lower reading.
- ๐ก Turn on the headlights and cabin blower, then verify that the battery warning light remains off and the electrical system operates normally.
- ๐ Stop the engine and recheck the output-terminal cap, electrical connector, battery terminal, and belt seating.
- ๐ Reset the clock and radio presets as needed. The engine idle may fluctuate briefly while learned settings are restored.
