📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move the cable away from the battery post so it cannot spring back.
  • 📸 Take a photo of the serpentine belt routing before removal. This makes reinstallation much easier.
  • 🧰 A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin handle used to rotate the belt tensioner and release belt tension.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside.
  • Never skip this step.

Step 2: Raise the Front Passenger Side if Needed

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the approved front lift point if you need more access from below.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper support points.
  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Wear safety glasses before working under the vehicle.

Step 3: Remove the Passenger Side Lower Splash Shield

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the splash shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips without breaking them.
  • A trim clip removal tool is a small fork-shaped tool that lifts plastic fasteners evenly.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 4: Note the Belt Routing

  • Use your phone to take a clear photo of the serpentine belt path.
  • The serpentine belt is the single long belt that drives accessories such as the alternator and A/C compressor.
  • Make sure the belt routing label under the hood matches what you see.

Step 5: Release Serpentine Belt Tension

  • Place a 19mm socket with a 1/2-inch breaker bar or serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley only.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its rest position.
  • Move slowly to protect your fingers.

Step 6: Remove the Alternator Electrical Connections

  • Press the locking tab on the alternator electrical connector and pull it straight off by hand.
  • If the connector is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently at the lock tab. Do not pry on the wires.
  • Lift the rubber boot from the alternator output terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the alternator output terminal nut.
  • Remove the cable from the stud and position it away from the alternator.

Step 7: Remove Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3-inch socket extension to loosen the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing the final bolt.
  • Remove the upper and lower alternator bolts.
  • If a wiring bracket is attached, use a 12mm socket or 10mm socket as fitted to remove the bracket fastener.

Step 8: Remove the Alternator

  • Work the alternator out of its bracket by hand.
  • If it is stuck in the bracket, gently wiggle it side to side.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only as a light lever at the mounting ear if needed.
  • Do not pry against the aluminum timing cover or damage the mounting surfaces.

Step 9: Compare the New Alternator

  • Place the old and new alternators side by side.
  • Check that the pulley, electrical connector, mounting ears, and output terminal are in the same locations.
  • Spin the new pulley by hand. It should turn smoothly with no scraping.

Step 10: Install the New Alternator

  • Set the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 10-100 ft-lbs to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Install the alternator output cable onto the terminal stud.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench rated 10-100 ft-lbs to tighten the terminal nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber protective boot fully over the terminal.
  • Plug in the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • If you removed a wiring bracket, reinstall it with the correct 10mm socket or 12mm socket and snug it securely.

Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around all pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use the 19mm socket with the 1/2-inch breaker bar or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the alternator pulley last.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
  • One missed groove can shred the belt.

Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to align the splash shield clips.
  • Push the clips into place until seated.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield bolts.
  • Snug the bolts only. Plastic shields can crack if overtightened.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Highlander slowly to the ground.

Step 15: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp until secure.
  • Do not overtighten the battery clamp.

Step 16: Check Charging Voltage

  • Set a digital multimeter to DC volts.
  • Touch the red probe to the positive battery terminal and the black probe to the negative terminal.
  • With the engine off, a healthy charged battery is usually about 12.4-12.7 volts.
  • Start the engine and check again. Charging voltage should typically read about 13.5-14.8 volts.
  • If voltage does not rise with the engine running, shut the engine off and recheck the alternator connector, output cable, and belt routing.

  • ✅ Start the engine and listen for belt squeal, grinding, or rattling.
  • ✅ Turn on headlights, rear defroster, and blower motor, then verify the battery warning light stays off.
  • ✅ Recheck belt alignment with the engine off.
  • ✅ Confirm the battery terminals are tight and clean.
  • ✅ Some radio presets, clock settings, and window auto functions may need to be reset after battery disconnection.
  • ✅ If the battery is weak or older, charge and test it. A failing battery can damage a new alternator.
