🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative clamp from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before working on the alternator wiring.
Step 2: Create Working Room
- Use a 10mm socket or nylon trim-clip removal tool to remove any upper intake duct fasteners that block access to the alternator.
- Release plastic clips carefully with the trim tool and move the duct aside.
- Keep each fastener arranged in removal order.
- Photograph each bracket before removing it.
Step 3: Record the Belt Routing
- Use the under-hood routing label or a phone camera to record how the belt passes around every pulley.
- Check the belt for cracks, shiny glazing, frayed edges, or oil contamination. Replace it if any damage is present.
Step 4: Release Serpentine-Belt Tension
- Install a 19mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar on the belt-tensioner hex.
- Rotate the spring-loaded tensioner clockwise slowly to create slack in the belt.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley while holding the tensioner securely.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
- Leave the belt routed around the remaining pulleys if it is being reused.
Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Press the locking tab and unplug the small alternator electrical connector by holding its plastic body. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if the tab cannot be released by hand.
- Open the rubber protective cap over the large output terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the output-terminal nut, then lift off the cable eyelet.
- Move the cable away from the alternator and protect its terminal from dirt.
- Inspect the connector and cable for melted plastic, corrosion, or overheated insulation.
Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand before loosening the final bolt.
- Use a 14mm socket, ratchet, and suitable 3/8-inch drive extension to loosen the upper alternator mounting bolt.
- Use the 14mm socket to remove the lower mounting bolt.
- Remove the upper bolt and retain any bracket or wire-harness guide in its original position.
- Rock the alternator gently to release it from the mounting bracket. Do not pry against an aluminum coolant passage or pulley.
Step 7: Compare the Replacement Alternator
- Place both alternators side by side and compare the electrical connector, output terminal, mounting ears, pulley diameter, pulley grooves, and clocking position.
- Turn the replacement pulley by hand. It should rotate smoothly without grinding or excessive looseness.
- Transfer only external wire guides or brackets that are not supplied with the replacement unit, using the appropriate 10mm socket or 12mm socket.
Step 8: Install the Replacement Alternator
- Lower the replacement alternator squarely into its mounting bracket.
- Install both mounting bolts by hand for several turns to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to seat the bolts evenly.
- Use a 10-80 Nm torque wrench with the 14mm socket to tighten the upper mounting bolt to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
- Use the same torque wrench and socket to tighten the lower mounting bolt to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Place the large output-cable eyelet flat against the alternator terminal.
- Install the terminal nut by hand, then use a 2-20 Nm inch-pound torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten it to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the terminal; the insulated stud can be damaged.
- Close the rubber terminal cap completely.
- Push the small electrical connector into the alternator until its lock clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt according to the under-hood diagram or your photograph. Make sure the ribbed side contacts grooved pulleys and the smooth side contacts smooth pulleys.
- Use the 19mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Inspect every pulley. Each belt rib must sit fully inside a matching pulley groove.
- Check the lowest pulley with a flashlight.
Step 11: Reinstall Removed Ducts and Covers
- Return the intake duct and any wire-harness guides to their original positions.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to snug the duct fasteners without crushing the plastic.
- Push reusable clips straight into place by hand after resetting their center pins with the nylon trim-clip removal tool.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Clean the battery post and terminal interior with the battery terminal cleaning brush if corrosion is present.
- Install the negative battery clamp fully onto the post.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the clamp until it cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten it.
- Apply a light coating of battery-terminal protectant after the connection is secure.
✅ After Repair
- 👀 Before starting the engine, inspect the engine compartment for loose tools and verify that the belt is correctly seated.
- 🚗 Start the engine and observe the belt from a safe distance. It should run smoothly without wandering, squealing, or fluttering.
- 💡 Confirm that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- 🔌 Switch on the headlights and cabin blower. Watch for dimming lights or a battery warning message.
