📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Corolla on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable, then move it away from the battery post.
  • A serpentine belt is the long rubber belt that drives the alternator, A/C compressor, and other accessories.
  • A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Take a clear photo of the belt routing before removal. This helps you reinstall it correctly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable end if needed.
  • Always disconnect negative first.

Step 2: Remove Upper Access Pieces

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release any plastic clips blocking access near the alternator area.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any small brackets or covers blocking the alternator, if equipped.
  • Place bolts and clips in a small tray so they do not get lost.

Step 3: Release the Serpentine Belt Tension

  • Locate the belt tensioner pulley on the front of the engine.
  • Place the 17mm serpentine belt tool on the tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly to loosen the belt.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley while holding the tensioner released.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.
  • Remove the belt fully if you are replacing it.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back.

Step 4: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connectors

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to gently release the lock tab on the small alternator connector, then unplug it.
  • Lift the rubber cover from the alternator main power terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the nut from the main alternator power wire.
  • Move the wire aside so it cannot contact metal.
  • Torque on installation: main alternator power terminal nut to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand so it does not drop when the bolts come out.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the upper alternator mounting bolt.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the lower alternator mounting bolt.
  • Remove the upper and lower bolts fully.
  • Rock the alternator gently by hand to free it from the bracket.
  • If it is stuck, use gentle hand pressure only. Do not hammer the alternator bracket.

Step 6: Remove the Alternator

  • Lift the alternator out through the top of the engine bay.
  • If space is tight, rotate the alternator slightly while lifting it out.
  • Compare the old alternator to the new alternator before installation.
  • Make sure the pulley, mounting ears, electrical connector, and power terminal are in the same positions.

Step 7: Install the New Alternator

  • Lower the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
  • Start the lower bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Start the upper bolt by hand next.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug both bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Torque alternator mounting bolts to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs)
  • Start bolts by hand first.

Step 8: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Push the small alternator connector into place until it clicks.
  • Place the main power wire onto the alternator terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut.
  • Torque main alternator power terminal nut to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
  • Reinstall the rubber protective cover over the terminal.

Step 9: Install the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the serpentine belt around the crankshaft pulley and accessory pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use the 17mm serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
  • Slide the belt over the alternator pulley last.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
  • If any belt rib is hanging off a pulley, release tension again and correct it before starting the engine.

Step 10: Reinstall Removed Covers and Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any brackets or covers removed earlier.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to help align plastic clips, then push them fully into place by hand.
  • Torque small 10mm-head bracket bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal nut until snug.
  • Torque battery terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Apply battery terminal protectant after the cable is secure.

Step 12: Test Charging Voltage

  • Set the digital multimeter to DC volts.
  • Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery post and the black meter lead to the negative battery post.
  • With the engine off, a healthy charged battery should usually read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
  • Start the engine and measure again with the digital multimeter.
  • A properly charging alternator should typically show about 13.5-14.8 volts at idle.
  • Turn on headlights and the blower fan, then confirm voltage stays steady above about 13.2 volts.

  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal, grinding, or rattling with the engine running.
  • ✅ Watch the belt for smooth tracking. It should not wobble or walk off a pulley.
  • ✅ Confirm the battery warning light turns off after startup.
  • ✅ Recheck battery terminal tightness after a short test drive.
  • ✅ If warning lights stay on or charging voltage is low, turn the engine off and recheck the alternator connector, main power wire, belt routing, and battery condition.
  • ✅ Some idle relearn may occur after battery disconnect. Let the engine idle with accessories off for a few minutes, then drive normally.
