🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Protect the Work Area

  • Place a fender cover over the front fender to protect the paint.
  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the cable off the battery post and tuck it aside where it cannot touch the post again.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the terminal if corrosion is present.
  • Power must be off first.

Step 3: Remove the Engine Cover

  • Lift the plastic engine cover straight upward by hand.
  • Set it aside in a safe place.

Step 4: Move the Intake Duct Out of the Way

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake hose clamp.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamps attached to the intake duct.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any intake duct fasteners.
  • Move the duct aside carefully so you have better access to the alternator and belt.

Step 5: Remove Upper Covers if They Block Access

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to lift plastic push clips without breaking them.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any small cover bolts.
  • Set the cover and clips aside together.

Step 6: Photograph the Belt Routing

  • Use your phone to take a picture of how the belt wraps around the pulleys.
  • Look at the ribbed side of the belt and confirm it sits in the grooves of the pulleys.
  • This photo prevents routing mistakes.

Step 7: Release the Belt Tension

  • Fit the serpentine belt tool 14mm or 17mm head onto the belt tensioner hex.
  • The belt tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to loosen the belt.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley by hand while holding the tensioner back.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.

Step 8: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Pull the belt off the remaining pulleys by hand.
  • Inspect the old belt for cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or frayed edges.
  • Replace the belt if there is any wear. It is smart to install a new belt while it is already off.

Step 9: Disconnect the Alternator Connector

  • Press the lock tab on the small alternator electrical connector by hand.
  • If it is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to help release the tab.
  • Pull the connector straight off the alternator.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 10: Disconnect the Main Alternator Cable

  • Lift the rubber cover from the alternator output terminal by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the nut from the output terminal.
  • Remove the cable eyelet from the stud and move it aside.
  • The eyelet is the round metal end of the cable that fits over the alternator stud.

Step 11: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch to remove the upper alternator mounting bolt.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen and remove the lower alternator mounting bolt.
  • Support the alternator with your hand as the last bolt comes out.

Step 12: Remove Any Blocking Bracket if Needed

  • If a small bracket blocks alternator removal, use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to remove its bolts.
  • Set the bracket and bolts aside in order.
  • Do not bend brackets to make room.

Step 13: Remove the Old Alternator

  • Rock the alternator gently by hand to free it from the mounting bracket.
  • If it is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver very lightly between the alternator ear and bracket.
  • Lift the alternator out through the top opening.
  • Go slow around hoses and wiring.

Step 14: Compare the New Alternator

  • Place the old and new alternators next to each other.
  • Confirm the mounting ears, pulley, electrical connector, and main cable stud match.
  • Spin the new pulley by hand. It should feel smooth with no grinding.

Step 15: Install the New Alternator

  • Lower the new alternator into the bracket by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-100 Nm to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 38-50 Nm (28-37 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Place the main cable eyelet onto the alternator output stud.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 5-100 Nm to tighten the output terminal nut to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber terminal cover fully back into place.
  • Plug in the small electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 17: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the serpentine drive belt around the pulleys using your photo.
  • Keep the belt ribs seated in the pulley grooves.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool 14mm or 17mm head to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt over the alternator pulley last.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Look closely at every pulley to confirm the belt is centered and fully seated.

Step 18: Reinstall Intake Ducting and Covers

  • Set the intake duct back into position by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake hose clamp until snug.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any spring clamps.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall intake duct bolts and cover bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to help align plastic clips, then press them in by hand.

Step 19: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 5-100 Nm to tighten the negative terminal clamp to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Apply battery terminal anti-corrosion protectant after tightening.

Step 20: Test Charging Voltage

  • Set the digital multimeter to DC volts.
  • Place the red meter lead on the positive battery post and the black meter lead on the negative battery post.
  • With the engine off, a charged battery should usually read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
  • Start the engine and check again. Normal charging voltage should usually be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
  • Turn on the headlights and blower motor, then confirm voltage stays stable.

  • ✅ Confirm the battery warning light turns off after startup.
  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal, chirping, rattling, or scraping.
  • ✅ Watch the belt while the engine idles. It should run straight and smooth.
  • ✅ If the power windows lose auto-up or auto-down, fully lower each window, fully raise it, then hold the switch up for 2 seconds.
  • ✅ If warning lights remain on, scan the charging system for diagnostic trouble codes after confirming charging voltage.
  • ✅ Recheck the battery terminals and belt position after a short test drive.
