- ๐ Open the hood. Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery-terminal nut, remove the terminal, and isolate it so it cannot spring back onto the post.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front-center jacking point to raise your Sentra.
- Position the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum beneath the reinforced front side support points. Lower the vehicle carefully onto them.
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver with insulated handle to remove the right-front lower splash-shield clips and open access to the drive belt.
- Keep each clip with its original panel.
Step 2: Inspect and record the belt routing
- Use the under-hood belt diagram and your photograph to identify how the belt passes around the crankshaft pulley, alternator, air-conditioning compressor, and tensioner.
- Inspect the belt while wearing safety glasses and mechanic's gloves. Replace it if the ribs are cracked, frayed, shiny, oil-soaked, or missing material.
Step 3: Release the automatic belt tensioner
- The tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that automatically keeps the belt tight.
- Fit the serpentine-belt tool with 14mm attachment or 14mm combination wrench onto the tensioner hex.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly against spring pressure until the belt becomes loose. Slide the belt off the alternator pulley with your free hand.
- Release the tensioner slowly. Never allow it to snap back.
- Remove the belt if it is being replaced; otherwise secure it away from the alternator.
Step 4: Disconnect the alternator wiring
- Confirm that the negative battery cable remains disconnected.
- Press the locking tab and unplug the small alternator electrical connector by hand. Pull on the connector housing, not its wires.
- Lift the rubber cover from the alternator output terminal.
- Use the 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the output-terminal nut. Lift off the heavy charging cable and position it aside.
- Do not twist the threaded terminal while removing the nut.
Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand before removing the final mounting bolt.
- Use the 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts.
- Remove both bolts with the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Note each bolt's position because different-length bolts must return to their original holes.
Step 6: Remove the old alternator
- Rock the alternator gently by hand to release it from the mounting bracket.
- If it is tight, use the flat-blade screwdriver with insulated handle only at a solid mounting ear. Do not pry against the pulley, plastic rear cover, or wiring.
- Guide the alternator out through the available upper or lower opening without striking the radiator, air-conditioning lines, or wiring harness.
- Never suspend the alternator by its wires.
Step 7: Compare the replacement alternator
- Place both alternators side by side and compare the mounting ears, pulley diameter, rib count, electrical connector, and output-terminal position.
- Turn the replacement pulley by hand while wearing mechanic's gloves. It should rotate smoothly without scraping, wobbling, or roughness.
- Transfer only removable brackets or cable guides that are supplied separately.
Step 8: Install the replacement alternator
- Lower the replacement alternator into position by hand and align its mounting ears with the engine bracket.
- Start both mounting bolts by hand for several turns. This prevents crossed threads.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to seat the bolts evenly.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the alternator wiring
- Place the charging cable squarely over the output terminal.
- Install the terminal nut with the 12mm socket and tighten it using the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to 10.8 Nm (96 in-lbs).
- Hold the cable still while tightening. Do not rotate or overtighten the insulated terminal stud.
- Push the rubber terminal cover fully into place.
- Reconnect the small electrical connector by hand until its lock clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall the drive belt
- Route the belt around every pulley according to the under-hood diagram, leaving the alternator pulley until last.
- Use the serpentine-belt tool with 14mm attachment or 14mm combination wrench to rotate the tensioner against spring pressure.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley and release the tensioner slowly.
- Use a flashlight-free visual check from above and below to verify that every belt rib sits inside the matching pulley groove. Keep fingers away from pulley pinch points.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar on the tensioner to release and reposition the belt if any rib is misaligned.
Step 11: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the vehicle
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool and your hands to reinstall the right-front splash shield and its clips.
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise your Sentra slightly, remove both jack stands, and lower it completely.
- Remove the rear wheel chocks only after the vehicle is safely on the ground.
Step 12: Reconnect the battery
- Push the negative battery terminal fully onto the battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten the terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the terminal; it only needs to remain secure when gently twisted by hand.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Before starting the engine, verify that no tools remain in the engine compartment and that the belt is seated correctly.
- ๐ Start the engine and listen for squealing, scraping, or knocking. Switch it off immediately if the belt wanders or the alternator pulley wobbles.
- โก Set the digital multimeter rated 20V DC minimum to DC volts. With the engine off, place the red probe on the positive battery post and the black probe on the negative post; a charged battery commonly reads approximately 12.4-12.7 volts.
- ๐ Repeat the measurement with the engine idling. Charging voltage will normally be approximately 13.5-14.8 volts, although Nissan's computer-controlled charging system can temporarily command a lower reading.
- ๐ก Turn on the headlights and cabin blower. Confirm that the battery warning light remains off and the electrical system operates normally.
