📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 1500 on level ground and let the engine cool completely.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Have the refrigerant recovered by a shop or with an A/C refrigerant recovery machine before loosening any A/C line.
  • Write down the refrigerant charge amount from the under-hood A/C label. Your 1500 uses R-1234yf.
  • Disconnect the 12V negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
  • A manifold gauge set is the hose-and-gauge tool used to measure A/C system pressure during vacuum and recharge.
  • A vacuum pump removes air and moisture from the opened A/C system before refrigerant is installed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Use an A/C refrigerant recovery machine connected to the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Recover the refrigerant until the machine shows the system is empty.
  • Confirm both gauges on the A/C manifold gauge set for R-1234yf read near 0 psi before opening the system.
  • Never loosen charged A/C lines.

Step 2: Disconnect the 12V Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes before unplugging compressor wiring.

Step 3: Remove the Intake Duct for Access

  • Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the air intake tube clamps.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release any plastic retainers holding the duct.
  • Lift the intake duct out of the engine bay and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt from the Compressor Pulley

  • Take a photo of the belt routing before removal.
  • Install the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive into the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.
  • Your photo prevents routing mistakes.

Step 5: Unplug the Compressor Electrical Connector

  • Press the locking tab on the compressor connector by hand.
  • If needed, use a pick tool set gently to lift the connector lock.
  • Pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Disconnect the A/C Lines from the Compressor

  • Place a drain pan under the compressor area to catch small oil drips.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the A/C line retaining bolt at the compressor manifold.
  • Gently wiggle the A/C line block off the compressor ports.
  • Use A/C line disconnect caps and plugs to cover the open lines immediately.
  • Use a pick tool set to remove the old seals from the line block.
  • Keep dirt out of open lines.

Step 7: Remove the A/C Compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Lower the compressor out carefully without bending nearby lines.
  • Keep the old compressor upright so oil does not spill unexpectedly.

Step 8: Check the Old Compressor Oil and Debris

  • Drain the old compressor oil into a clean container using your hands and a drain pan.
  • Look for shiny metal flakes or gray sludge.
  • If metal debris is present, replace the A/C condenser and expansion valve. The condenser has tiny passages that cannot be reliably cleaned after compressor failure.
  • If the oil is clean, continue with compressor replacement.

Step 9: Prepare the New Compressor

  • Compare the new compressor to the old one by hand. The pulley, connector, mounting ears, and line ports must match.
  • Check the compressor oil instructions included with the new unit.
  • Add or drain PAG refrigerant oil, correct Ram A/C specification as needed so the total oil amount matches the compressor supplier instructions and A/C service label.
  • Rotate the compressor clutch/pulley by hand about 10 turns to spread oil internally.

Step 10: Install the New Compressor

  • Position the new compressor on the bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Install New A/C Line Seals

  • Use a pick tool set to confirm all old seals are removed from the line block.
  • Lightly coat the new seals with clean PAG refrigerant oil, correct Ram A/C specification.
  • Install the new seals onto the A/C line block by hand.
  • Push the line block squarely onto the compressor ports.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb to tighten the A/C line retaining bolt to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Replace the Receiver/Drier or Desiccant Element

  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to remove the receiver/drier or desiccant cover fasteners, depending on the service part design.
  • Remove the old receiver/drier or desiccant element by hand.
  • Lubricate new seals with clean PAG refrigerant oil, correct Ram A/C specification.
  • Install the new receiver/drier or desiccant element quickly to limit moisture exposure.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb to tighten small A/C cover fasteners to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 13: Reconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector

  • Push the compressor connector on by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector by hand to confirm it is locked.

Step 14: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt using the photo you took earlier.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the A/C compressor pulley by hand.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.
  • Check every pulley groove with a flat-blade screwdriver as a pointer only. The belt must sit fully in each pulley groove.

Step 15: Reinstall the Intake Duct

  • Place the intake duct back into position by hand.
  • Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to tighten the intake tube clamps.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to help seat any plastic retainers without breaking them.

Step 16: Reconnect the 12V Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back on the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 17: Evacuate the A/C System

  • Connect the A/C manifold gauge set for R-1234yf to the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Connect the center hose to the A/C vacuum pump.
  • Run the vacuum pump for at least 45 minutes.
  • Close the manifold valves and turn off the vacuum pump.
  • Watch the gauges for 10-15 minutes. The vacuum should hold steady.
  • If vacuum drops, there is a leak that must be fixed before charging.

Step 18: Recharge the A/C System

  • Place the refrigerant cylinder on a digital refrigerant scale.
  • Charge the system with R-1234yf refrigerant using the exact amount shown on your under-hood A/C label.
  • Use the A/C manifold gauge set for R-1234yf to monitor pressures while charging.
  • Start the engine only after the initial safe charge amount is in the system.
  • Set A/C to maximum cold, blower high, and recirculation on.
  • Finish charging by weight, not by guessing pressure.

  • ✅ Let the engine idle with A/C on maximum for 5-10 minutes.
  • ✅ Check for cold air at the vents. Vent temperature should steadily drop once the compressor is operating.
  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal, clicking, grinding, or rapid compressor cycling.
  • ✅ Use the A/C manifold gauge set for R-1234yf to confirm pressures are stable and within normal range for the outside temperature.
  • ✅ Inspect all A/C line connections for oily residue, which can indicate a refrigerant leak.
  • ✅ If the A/C does not cool, do not keep running it. Recheck refrigerant charge weight, compressor command, and leak status.
