🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant
- Use the refrigerant recovery machine R-134a (specialty) and A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to recover the refrigerant from the high-side and low-side service ports.
- Confirm both gauges read 0 psi before opening the A/C system.
- Never vent refrigerant.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery and secure it away from the post.
Step 3: Remove the Engine Under Cover if Needed
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove the lower splash shield clips if you need extra belt access from below.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any under-cover bolts.
- Set the clips and bolts aside in order so they go back into the same locations.
Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Drive Belt
- Locate the belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
- Use a serpentine belt tool 14mm or 14mm socket with ratchet to rotate the tensioner and release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- If reusing the belt, note the belt routing before removal.
- Take a photo first.
Step 5: Unplug the A/C Compressor Connector
- Press the lock tab on the compressor electrical connector by hand.
- If the tab is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to help release it.
- Move the wiring harness away from the compressor so it cannot be pulled or pinched.
Step 6: Disconnect the A/C Lines from the Compressor
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to remove the A/C suction and discharge line retaining bolts at the compressor.
- Carefully pull the line blocks straight away from the compressor ports.
- Use the A/C line disconnect caps set to cap the open lines and compressor ports immediately.
- Remove and discard the old O-rings from the line fittings.
- Do not reuse O-rings.
Step 7: Remove the Old Compressor
- Support the compressor by hand so it does not drop when the bolts are removed.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension set to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Lift the compressor out of the engine bay carefully without bending the A/C lines.
Step 8: Check Compressor Oil Amount
- Drain the oil from the old compressor into a PAG oil measuring cup by turning the compressor ports downward and rotating the pulley by hand.
- Drain the shipping oil from the new compressor into a clean PAG oil measuring cup.
- Add the same amount of clean PAG 46 refrigerant oil to the new compressor that came out of the old compressor, unless the compressor supplier instructions specify a different pre-filled amount.
- Rotate the new compressor clutch plate by hand 10-15 turns to distribute the oil.
Step 9: Install the New Compressor
- Position the new compressor onto the engine bracket.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to snug the mounting bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 5-80 Nm to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the A/C Lines
- Lightly coat the new O-rings with clean PAG 46 refrigerant oil.
- Install the new O-rings onto the A/C line fittings by hand.
- Remove the caps and seat each A/C line block squarely onto the compressor port.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to install the line retaining bolts.
- Use a torque wrench 5-80 Nm to tighten the A/C line bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the compressor until the lock clicks.
- Gently tug the connector by hand to confirm it is locked in place.
Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo or belt routing diagram.
- Use the serpentine belt tool 14mm or 14mm socket to rotate the tensioner.
- Slide the belt over the A/C compressor pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
- Misaligned belts shred quickly.
Step 13: Reinstall the Under Cover
- Raise the lower splash shield into position by hand.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to reinstall the clips without bending them.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any under-cover bolts.
- Use a torque wrench 5-80 Nm to tighten small under-cover bolts to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 14: Evacuate the A/C System
- Connect the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to the high-side and low-side service ports.
- Connect the center hose to the vacuum pump 2-stage A/C service.
- Open both manifold valves and run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
- Close both valves and turn the pump off.
- Watch the gauges for 10-15 minutes; vacuum should hold steady. If vacuum drops, there is a leak that must be fixed before charging.
Step 15: Recharge the A/C System
- Use the digital refrigerant scale to charge the system with R-134a refrigerant.
