📋 Before You Begin

  • A manifold gauge set is a hose-and-gauge tool used to read A/C system pressures and connect the vacuum pump or refrigerant source.
  • A vacuum pump removes air and moisture from the A/C system before charging.
  • A refrigerant scale measures the exact refrigerant amount by weight.
  • Check the under-hood A/C label for the exact refrigerant type and charge amount before recharging.
  • If using a new compressor, compare the oil amount in the replacement compressor with the old compressor and adjust oil quantity as needed.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Use an A/C refrigerant recovery machine with R-1234yf service coupler set to recover the refrigerant from the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Do not loosen any A/C lines until both gauges show the system is empty.
  • Never vent refrigerant outdoors.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front support points.
  • Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels before working underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower engine splash shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to remove plastic retainers.
  • Lower the splash shield and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 17mm socket on the belt tensioner to rotate the tensioner and release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley first.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing before removal if the routing label is missing.
  • A photo saves confusion later.

Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector

  • Use nitrile gloves and press the lock tab on the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  • If the connector is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently on the lock tab only.
  • Move the harness away from the compressor so it does not get pinched.

Step 6: Remove the A/C Lines from the Compressor

  • Use a 12mm socket or 12mm wrench to remove the suction and discharge line retaining bolts from the compressor.
  • Carefully pull the A/C line blocks straight away from the compressor.
  • Use needle-nose pliers only if needed to remove old O-rings from the line fittings.
  • Cap or cover the open A/C lines right away to keep dirt and moisture out.
  • Torque line retaining bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs) during installation.

Step 7: Remove the Compressor Mounting Bolts

  • Support the compressor with one hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Lower the compressor carefully from the engine bracket.
  • Torque compressor mounting bolts to 20-25 Nm (15-18 ft-lbs) during installation.

Step 8: Prepare the New Compressor

  • Place the old and new compressors side by side and compare the pulley, connector, mounting ears, and line ports.
  • Use a drain pan to drain oil from the old compressor into a clean measuring container if possible.
  • Add the correct amount of PAG oil for R-1234yf A/C systems to the new compressor as required.
  • Rotate the new compressor clutch plate by hand several turns to spread oil inside.
  • Do not use universal unknown oil.

Step 9: Install the New Compressor

  • Lift the new compressor into position by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket to snug the mounting bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 Nm to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 20-25 Nm (15-18 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Install New A/C Line O-Rings

  • Remove the old O-rings from the suction and discharge line fittings using needle-nose pliers if needed.
  • Lightly coat the new O-rings with clean PAG oil for R-1234yf A/C systems.
  • Install the new O-rings by hand. Make sure they sit flat and are not twisted.
  • Reconnect the A/C lines to the compressor.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 5-80 Nm to tighten the line retaining bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Push the compressor electrical connector in by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector to confirm it is locked.

Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys according to the belt routing label or your photo.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 17mm socket to rotate the belt tensioner.
  • Slip the belt over the A/C compressor pulley last, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Raise the splash shield into position.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield bolts until snug.
  • Do not overtighten plastic shield fasteners.

Step 14: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the terminal until it does not rotate by hand.

Step 15: Evacuate the A/C System

  • Connect the R-1234yf manifold gauge set and R-1234yf service coupler set to the service ports.
  • Connect the center hose to the R-1234yf vacuum pump.
  • Run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
  • Close the manifold valves and verify the system holds vacuum for at least 10-15 minutes.
  • If vacuum drops, find and repair the leak before charging.

Step 16: Recharge the A/C System

  • Use a R-1234yf refrigerant scale to charge by exact weight only.
  • Charge to the amount printed on the under-hood A/C label.
  • Start the engine, set A/C to max cool, blower high, and windows open.
  • Continue charging only through the low-side port as directed by the charging equipment.
  • Do not guess the charge amount by gauge pressure alone.

  • ✅ Check that the compressor engages and the center vent temperature drops steadily.
  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal, grinding, clicking, or rattling near the compressor.
  • ✅ Use the R-1234yf manifold gauge set to verify low-side and high-side pressures are normal for the ambient temperature.
  • ✅ Inspect both compressor line fittings for oily residue, which can indicate a refrigerant leak.
  • ✅ If cooling is weak after correct charging, check for condenser airflow problems, expansion valve restriction, or internal compressor debris.
