🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Wear safety glasses and mechanic's gloves.
  • Use an R-1234yf refrigerant identifier to verify that the system is not contaminated.
  • Use an R-1234yf recovery station to recover the entire charge through the high- and low-side service ports.
  • Confirm that both sides remain at zero pressure before loosening a refrigerant fitting.
  • A shop can perform this stage safely.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands beneath the left and right front support points, then lower your Camry securely onto them.
  • Gently push the vehicle to verify that it is stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Engine Covers

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower-cover screws.
  • Use a plastic trim-clip removal tool to release the plastic retainers without breaking them.
  • Remove the covers and organize the fasteners by location.

Step 4: Record and Remove the Drive Belt

  • Use a serpentine-belt routing diagram marker to draw the belt path or photograph it before removal.
  • Fit a 19mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch drive breaker bar onto the automatic belt tensioner. The tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley that maintains belt tension.
  • Rotate the tensioner only far enough to release belt tension, then slide the belt from the compressor pulley.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
  • Remove the belt if it is being replaced; otherwise keep it clean and note its original rotation direction.

Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to release the connector lock.
  • Press the connector tab and pull on the connector housing, not the wires.
  • Inspect the terminals for corrosion, heat damage, oil, or looseness.

Step 6: Disconnect the Refrigerant Lines

  • Confirm again with the R-1234yf manifold gauge set that both sides are at zero pressure.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the suction- and discharge-line retaining bolts.
  • Gently lift each line straight away from the compressor. Do not bend or pry against the aluminum tubes.
  • Immediately install refrigerant-line sealing caps on the lines and compressor ports.
  • Discard both old O-rings. Never reuse refrigerant seals.

Step 7: Remove the Old Compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand because it is heavier than it appears.
  • Use a 12mm or 14mm socket, as fitted to the original mounting bolts, with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and extension to loosen the compressor bolts evenly.
  • Remove the lower bolts last, then lower the compressor through the bottom opening.
  • Do not rotate or invert the old compressor until its oil is measured.

Step 8: Inspect for Internal Failure

  • Use safety glasses and inspect the old compressor oil and line ports under bright light.
  • Look for metallic glitter, gray sludge, black particles, or burned oil.
  • If debris is present, stop and replace the condenser/receiver assembly and expansion valve before installing the compressor.
  • Do not attempt to flush the replacement compressor. Do not solvent-flush a contaminated parallel-flow condenser.

Step 9: Balance the Compressor Oil

  • Use a graduated oil measuring cup to measure the oil drained from the old compressor.
  • Check the oil quantity supplied inside the new compressor and follow its manufacturer-specific oil-balancing instructions.
  • Use only the Toyota-specified oil compatible with the refrigerant shown on your Camry's under-hood label.
  • Do not add a full system oil quantity to a compressor that is already oil-filled. Too much oil reduces cooling and can damage the system.
  • Use clean gloves and slowly rotate the new compressor hub by hand several turns after oil balancing.

Step 10: Install the New Compressor

  • Keep the compressor ports capped while positioning it in the mounting bracket.
  • Start every compressor mounting bolt by hand to avoid damaged threads.
  • Use the correct 12mm or 14mm socket and a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts evenly.
  • Torque the compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Install New Refrigerant-Line O-Rings

  • Use mechanic's gloves to remove the port caps immediately before connecting each line.
  • Lightly coat the new O-rings with the same clean compressor oil specified for the system.
  • Install each O-ring into its proper line groove. Do not twist, stretch, or double-stack the seals.
  • Seat each line squarely against the compressor by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the line-retaining bolts.
  • Torque the refrigerant-line bolts to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).

Step 12: Reconnect the Compressor Wiring

  • Push the electrical connector onto the compressor until the lock clicks.
  • Pull gently on the connector housing to confirm that it is fully locked.
  • Ensure the harness is clipped away from the belt, pulley, and exhaust components.

Step 13: Reinstall the Drive Belt

  • Route the drive belt according to the diagram recorded earlier. Make sure every rib sits inside a matching pulley groove.
  • Use the 19mm six-point socket and 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slip the belt over the final smooth pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Inspect every pulley from above and below. A belt offset by one groove must be corrected before starting the engine.

Step 14: Reinstall the Lower Covers

  • Position the covers and install the plastic retainers by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the cover screws without overtightening them.
  • Use the floor jack to lift your Camry slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it to the ground.

Step 15: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to secure the negative battery terminal.
  • Torque the negative terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Do not start the engine until the A/C system has been evacuated and charged.

Step 16: Leak-Test and Evacuate the System

  • Use a dry-nitrogen regulator and electronic refrigerant leak detector to check every opened connection. Never use oxygen or compressed shop air.
  • Release the test nitrogen safely after leak testing.
  • Connect the R-1234yf manifold gauge set and two-stage vacuum pump.
  • Evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes, then isolate the pump and verify that the vacuum holds for at least 10 minutes.
  • If vacuum decays, locate and repair the leak before charging.

Step 17: Charge the System by Weight

  • Place the approved refrigerant cylinder on an electronic refrigerant scale.
  • Use the R-1234yf recovery and recharge station to install the exact charge weight printed on the under-hood A/C label.
  • Do not estimate the charge from vent temperature or pressure readings.
  • Use an electronic refrigerant leak detector to inspect the compressor fittings and service ports after charging.

Step 18: Check A/C Operation

  • Use an OEM-capable bidirectional scan tool to check the air-conditioning control module and engine control module for diagnostic trouble codes.
  • Start the engine and set the climate control to maximum cooling, fresh-air mode, and high blower speed.
  • Use the scan tool to compare requested compressor operation, refrigerant pressure, and evaporator temperature.
  • Observe the belt and compressor pulley from a safe distance. Stop immediately if the belt wanders, squeals, or vibrates.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm that cold air comes from all dashboard vents and that vent temperature remains stable.
  • 🔍 Inspect both compressor line connections with an electronic refrigerant leak detector.
  • 🛢️ Check beneath the compressor for oil residue, which can indicate a refrigerant leak.
