📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Odyssey on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before removing any A/C lines.
- Check the under-hood A/C label for the exact refrigerant charge amount. Use that label if it differs from any service reference.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- A manifold gauge set is a pair of gauges and hoses used to measure A/C pressure and connect a vacuum pump or refrigerant.
- A vacuum pump removes air and moisture from the A/C system before recharge.
- Oil balance means measuring the oil drained from the old compressor and adding the correct amount to the new one.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant
- Connect an R-134a manifold gauge set to the high-side and low-side service ports.
- Use an A/C refrigerant recovery machine to recover all refrigerant from the system.
- Confirm both gauges read 0 psi before opening any A/C line.
- Never vent refrigerant to atmosphere.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Odyssey at the front subframe jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the stands and shake the vehicle lightly to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum nearby as a backup support, but do not rely on it alone.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower engine splash shield.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove any 10mm bolts holding the shield.
- Lower the splash shield and set it aside on a shop towel.
Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt from the Compressor Pulley
- Locate the automatic belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
- Use a serpentine belt tool 14mm on the tensioner hex to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
- Slip the belt off the A/C compressor pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool 14mm.
- If replacing the belt, remove it fully and note the belt routing before removal.
Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector
- From underneath, locate the compressor clutch connector on the compressor body.
- Press the connector lock tab by hand and pull the connector straight off.
- If the tab is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch gently on the release tab.
- Move the harness aside so it cannot get pinched.
Step 6: Remove the A/C Line Manifold from the Compressor
- Place a drain pan 8-quart under the compressor area to catch oil drips.
- Use a 12mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet wrench to remove the A/C line manifold bolt from the compressor.
- Carefully pull the line manifold straight away from the compressor by hand.
- Use needle-nose pliers 6-inch only if an old O-ring sticks to the compressor port.
- Cap or cover the open lines with clean shop towels to keep dirt and moisture out.
Step 7: Remove the Compressor Mounting Bolts
- Support the compressor with one hand from underneath.
- Use a 12mm socket, 12-inch extension, and ratchet wrench to remove the upper compressor mounting bolts.
- Use a 12mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet wrench to remove the lower compressor mounting bolts.
- Keep the bolts organized on a shop towel.
Step 8: Remove the Old Compressor
- Lower the old A/C compressor out through the bottom of the engine bay.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently move splash shield edges or wiring aside if needed.
- Do not pry against aluminum A/C lines.
Step 9: Balance the Compressor Oil
- Hold the old compressor over a drain pan 8-quart and rotate the clutch plate by hand to drain oil from the ports.
- Measure the oil drained from the old compressor using a clean measuring container.
- Drain shipping oil from the new compressor if the compressor instructions require it.
- Add the same amount of PAG 46 refrigerant oil to the new compressor unless the compressor manufacturer provides a different oil-charge instruction.
- Rotate the new compressor clutch plate by hand 10-15 turns to distribute oil.
- Correct oil amount protects the compressor.
Step 10: Install the New Compressor
- Lift the new A/C compressor into position from underneath.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first.
- Use a 12mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet wrench to snug the lower bolts.
- Use a 12mm socket, 12-inch extension, and ratchet wrench to snug the upper bolts.
- Use a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive and 12mm socket to tighten the compressor mounting bolts.
- Torque to 24 Nm (18 ft-lbs)
Step 11: Install New Compressor O-Rings
- Remove the old manifold O-rings using needle-nose pliers 6-inch or a small flat-blade screwdriver gently.
- Lightly coat the new A/C compressor manifold O-ring set with clean PAG 46 refrigerant oil.
- Install the new O-rings by hand. Make sure they sit flat and are not twisted.
Step 12: Reconnect the A/C Line Manifold
- Remove the shop towels from the open A/C lines.
- Push the line manifold straight into the compressor ports by hand.
- Start the manifold bolt by hand first.
- Use a 12mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet wrench to snug the bolt.
- Use a torque wrench 1/4-inch drive and 12mm socket to tighten the manifold bolt.
- Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs)
Step 13: Reconnect the Compressor Connector
- Push the compressor clutch connector onto the compressor by hand until it clicks.
- Use your hand to route the harness away from the belt and pulley.
- Use needle-nose pliers 6-inch to resecure any harness clip if it came loose.
Step 14: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt over the pulleys using the belt routing label under the hood.
- Use the serpentine belt tool 14mm to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the A/C compressor pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool 14mm.
- Use a flashlight if needed to confirm the belt ribs are seated correctly on every pulley.
Step 15: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Raise the splash shield into place by hand.
- Install the plastic push clips using your fingers or a trim clip removal tool.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench to install the 10mm bolts.
- Use a torque wrench 1/4-inch drive and 10mm socket to tighten the shield bolts.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 16: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Odyssey slowly to the ground with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
Step 17: Evacuate the A/C System
- Connect the R-134a manifold gauge set to the high-side and low-side service ports.
- Connect the center hose to the vacuum pump 3 CFM minimum.
- Open both manifold valves and run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
- Close both manifold valves and turn off the vacuum pump.
- Let the system sit for 10-15 minutes and confirm it holds vacuum. If vacuum drops, find and repair the leak before charging.
Step 18: Recharge the A/C System
- Place the R-134a refrigerant cylinder on a digital refrigerant scale.
- Charge the system by weight through the low-side service port using the R-134a manifold gauge set.
- Use the exact charge amount printed on the under-hood A/C label.
- Start the engine only when your manifold gauge instructions call for low-side vapor charging.
- Set the climate control to LO temperature, A/C ON, and blower on high.
- Do not overcharge the system.
Step 19: Final Battery and Leak Check
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket if it was still disconnected.
- Use a torque wrench 1/4-inch drive and 10mm socket to tighten the battery terminal.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- With the engine running and A/C ON, inspect the compressor manifold joint for oil residue or bubbles using safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Listen for abnormal compressor noise.
