How to Replace the AC Compressor on a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, safety tips, and recharge guidance for 2016, 2017
🔧 AC Compressor - Replacement
Assumption: This guide covers the belt-driven AC compressor and related seal service on your Equinox. Because the refrigerant must be recovered with equipment, this is best handled with proper A/C recovery gear or by a shop before opening the system.
The compressor is the heart of the A/C system. Replacing it means removing the drive belt, disconnecting refrigerant lines, swapping the compressor, and then evacuating and recharging the system with the correct oil and refrigerant.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Do not open the A/C system until the refrigerant has been properly recovered.
- Refrigerant can cause frostbite and eye injury.
- Keep the engine off and cool before working near the belt drive.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging compressor electrical connectors.
- Use jack stands if you need access from underneath.
- Replace all disturbed O-rings and add the correct A/C compressor oil.
- After repair, the system must be evacuated and recharged to specification.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully.
- Recover the refrigerant with proper A/C equipment before opening the system.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Keep dirt out of the open lines. Cap every opening right away.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover refrigerant and disconnect power
- Use the A/C recovery, vacuum, and recharge machine to remove the refrigerant from the system.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Wait a few minutes before touching any electrical connectors.
Step 2: Remove the drive belt
- Use the serpentine belt tool to release belt tension.
- Slip the belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine bay.
- Take a photo of the belt route first.
Step 3: Access the compressor
- If needed, raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and support it on jack stands.
- Remove any splash shields or covers with a metric socket set and trim clip tool.
- Clean the area around the compressor lines before opening anything.
Step 4: Disconnect the compressor
- Unplug the compressor electrical connector by hand.
- Use a line wrench set to remove the refrigerant line fittings.
- Remove the old O-rings and keep dirt out of the open ports.
Step 5: Remove the compressor
- Use a metric socket set and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Support the compressor as you remove the last bolt.
- Lift the compressor out carefully.
Step 6: Prepare the replacement compressor
- Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if possible.
- Add the correct amount and type of AC compressor oil to the new compressor.
- Install new O-rings and lightly lubricate them with clean A/C oil.
Step 7: Install the new compressor
- Set the new compressor in place by hand.
- Install the mounting bolts with a metric socket set and tighten to factory specification.
- Reconnect the refrigerant lines with a line wrench set and tighten to factory specification.
- Reconnect the electrical connector.
- Do not overtighten aluminum fittings.
Step 8: Reinstall the belt and covers
- Install the new serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tool.
- Make sure the belt sits fully in every pulley groove.
- Reinstall splash shields and covers with a metric socket set and trim clip tool.
Step 9: Evacuate and recharge the system
- Use the A/C recovery, vacuum, and recharge machine to pull a deep vacuum.
- Leak test the system during vacuum hold.
- Recharge with the exact refrigerant amount listed on the underhood label.
- Use the correct refrigerant type for your Equinox.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and turn the A/C on max.
- Check that the compressor engages smoothly.
- Verify cold air at the vents.
- Look for oil or refrigerant leaks at the line fittings.
- Listen for belt noise or pulley wobble.
- Recheck cooling performance after a short test drive.
