📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Colorado on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered with an A/C recovery machine before loosening any A/C line.
  • Record the recovered refrigerant amount if possible. This helps identify leaks or undercharge.
  • Check the underhood A/C label for the exact refrigerant charge amount. Use that label as the final authority.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
  • If the old compressor failed internally or sent metal through the system, the condenser and lines may need additional service before installing the new compressor.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the refrigerant

  • Use an A/C recovery machine to recover all refrigerant from the system.
  • Use an A/C manifold gauge set R-134a only with proper recovery equipment attached.
  • Confirm both high-side and low-side gauges read 0 psi before opening any line.
  • Do not vent refrigerant.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery cable nut.
  • Remove the negative cable and position it so it cannot spring back to the battery post.

Step 3: Raise and support the front of the truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Colorado at the approved front lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame support points.
  • Gently lower the truck onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Never work under only a jack.

Step 4: Remove the lower splash shield if equipped

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower shield fasteners.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release any plastic clips.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 5: Remove the serpentine belt from the compressor pulley

  • Take a photo of the belt routing before removal.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.

Step 6: Disconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver to release the locking tab on the A/C compressor clutch connector.
  • Pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 7: Disconnect the A/C lines from the compressor

  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the compressor line manifold bolt.
  • Carefully pull the line block away from the compressor.
  • Use an A/C line cap and plug kit to cap the open lines and compressor ports immediately.
  • Use a pick tool set to remove the old O-rings from the line block.
  • Keep dirt out of open lines.

Step 8: Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts

  • Support the compressor with one hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Lower the compressor out carefully from the bottom side.

Step 9: Prepare the new compressor

  • Place the old compressor over a drain pan and drain the oil from it.
  • Measure the drained oil amount if possible.
  • Drain the shipping oil from the new compressor if instructed by the compressor supplier.
  • Add the correct amount of PAG A/C compressor oil to the new compressor, matching the compressor instructions and system service needs.
  • Turn the compressor hub by hand 10-15 revolutions to distribute the oil.
  • The compressor hub is the center part of the pulley that turns the compressor shaft.

Step 10: Install the new compressor

  • Raise the new compressor into position by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Install new A/C line seals

  • Use a pick tool set only if needed to remove any remaining old seal material.
  • Lightly coat the new compressor manifold seals with clean PAG A/C compressor oil.
  • Install the new seals onto the A/C line block.
  • Position the line block squarely against the compressor.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the line manifold bolt to Torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Reconnect the compressor electrical connector

  • Push the compressor clutch connector on by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector to confirm it is locked.

Step 13: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt using your photo or the underhood belt routing decal.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt fully onto the A/C compressor pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check every pulley groove by sight and feel to make sure the belt is seated correctly.

Step 14: Replace the receiver/drier or desiccant service kit

  • Use the appropriate 10mm socket, 13mm socket, or flat-blade screwdriver as needed for the drier or desiccant cover fasteners.
  • Replace the receiver/drier or desiccant service kit according to the part design supplied for your Colorado.
  • Lubricate new seals with clean PAG A/C compressor oil.
  • Tighten small A/C line or cover fasteners snugly with the torque wrench 5-50 Nm to the specification supplied with the service kit if provided.
  • The receiver/drier removes moisture from the refrigerant; it should be replaced whenever the system is opened.

Step 15: Replace the expansion valve

  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket as equipped to remove the expansion valve fasteners at the evaporator line connection.
  • Use an A/C line cap and plug kit to protect open fittings.
  • Install the new expansion valve with new lubricated seals.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the expansion valve fasteners evenly to the specification supplied with the valve if provided.
  • The expansion valve meters refrigerant into the evaporator, which is the cold part inside the dash.

Step 16: Vacuum the A/C system

  • Connect the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Connect the center hose to the vacuum pump 2-stage R-134a.
  • Run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
  • Close the manifold valves and turn off the pump.
  • Watch the gauges for at least 10 minutes. Vacuum should hold steady.
  • If vacuum drops, use the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to verify the system is sealed before charging.

Step 17: Recharge the A/C system

  • Use a digital refrigerant scale to charge by weight only.
  • Add the exact amount of R-134a refrigerant shown on your Colorado underhood A/C label.
  • Charge through the low-side port using the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a.
  • Do not guess by pressure alone. Pressure changes with temperature.

Step 18: Reinstall the lower splash shield

  • Raise the splash shield into place by hand.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic clips if needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall shield fasteners.
  • Tighten the shield fasteners snugly. Do not over-tighten plastic or light-duty shield hardware.

Step 19: Lower the truck and reconnect the battery

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck fully to the ground.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the battery terminal snugly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Colorado and let it idle.
  • Turn the A/C to maximum cooling and highest blower speed.
  • Confirm the compressor clutch engages and the center hub begins cycling as commanded.
  • Check the compressor line connection for leaks using proper A/C leak detection equipment if available.
  • Listen for belt squeal, grinding, or rattling near the compressor.
  • Confirm cold air at the vents after a few minutes of operation.
  • If cooling is weak, stop and recheck refrigerant charge weight, vacuum integrity, belt routing, and electrical connector seating.
  • If the old compressor failed internally, have the system inspected for debris before extended use.
