The refrigerant must be professionally recovered before you open the system because venting refrigerant is unsafe and illegal.

  • ⚠️ Do not loosen any A/C line until the refrigerant has been fully recovered with an approved recovery machine.
  • ⚠️ Refrigerant can cause frostbite and eye injury. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the compressor clutch connector.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt and moisture out of open A/C lines. Cap every opening immediately.
  • ⚠️ If the old compressor failed internally, the condenser, expansion valve, and receiver/drier should be replaced and the lines flushed where serviceable.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your TITAN on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before starting. Recovery means removing refrigerant into a sealed machine instead of releasing it into the air.
  • Let the engine cool completely before working near the radiator fan, belt, and compressor.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Check the underhood A/C label for the exact refrigerant charge amount. Recharge must be done by weight, not by pressure guessing.
  • If replacing only the compressor, measure the oil drained from the old compressor and match that amount in the new compressor unless the compressor manufacturer gives different instructions.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Use an A/C manifold gauge set R-134a and refrigerant recovery machine R-134a (specialty) to recover the refrigerant from the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • If you do not have recovery equipment, have a shop evacuate the refrigerant first, then bring your TITAN back home for the mechanical repair.
  • Confirm both gauges read 0 psi after recovery before loosening any A/C fitting.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling the terminal later.

Step 3: Raise the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front lifting point.
  • Support the frame securely with jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Keep wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Never work under only a jack.

Step 4: Remove Lower Access Shields

  • Use a 10mm socket and plastic trim clip remover to remove the lower splash shield or skid plate fasteners as equipped.
  • Set the fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same places.
  • Torque skid plate bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) during reinstallation.

Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Take a clear photo of the belt routing before removal.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool 14mm on the belt tensioner. The tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension, then slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay if replacing it.

Step 6: Unplug the Compressor Connector

  • Locate the electrical connector on the A/C compressor clutch.
  • Press the lock tab by hand and unplug the connector.
  • If the connector is stuck, use a plastic trim clip remover gently. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 7: Disconnect the A/C Lines

  • Place a drain pan under the compressor area to catch any oil drips.
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the A/C suction and discharge line retaining bolt or bolts at the compressor.
  • Carefully pull the line block straight away from the compressor.
  • Immediately install A/C line caps and plugs on the open lines and compressor ports.
  • Discard the old O-rings. Do not reuse them.
  • Torque A/C line retaining bolt to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs) during reinstallation.

Step 8: Remove the A/C Compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension set to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Lower the compressor out carefully from below.
  • Torque compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) during reinstallation.

Step 9: Prepare the New Compressor

  • Drain oil from the old compressor into a clean measuring container by turning the hub by hand while tipping the ports downward.
  • Drain the shipping oil from the new compressor if instructed by the compressor supplier.
  • Add the correct amount of PAG A/C compressor oil to the new compressor following the compressor instruction sheet.
  • Turn the compressor hub by hand 10 times to spread the oil inside.
  • Correct oil amount prevents compressor failure.

Step 10: Install the New Compressor

  • Lift the new compressor into position from below.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench 20-100 Nm to tighten the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect the A/C Lines

  • Remove the caps from the compressor and line block only when ready to connect them.
  • Lightly coat the new O-rings with clean PAG A/C compressor oil.
  • Install the new O-rings onto the A/C line fittings.
  • Push the line block straight onto the compressor ports.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the retaining bolt.
  • Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).

Step 12: Reconnect the Compressor Connector

  • Push the electrical connector onto the compressor clutch until it clicks.
  • Use your hand to tug lightly on the connector body to confirm it is locked.
  • Do not tug on the wires.

Step 13: Install the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt according to your photo or the belt routing decal.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool 14mm to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.
  • A misrouted belt can jump off quickly.

Step 14: Reinstall Lower Shields

  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield or skid plate fasteners.
  • Use a torque wrench 20-100 Nm on skid plate bolts if equipped.
  • Torque skid plate bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-50 Nm if available.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 16: Vacuum-Test the A/C System

  • Connect the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Connect the A/C vacuum pump 2-stage to the gauge set.
  • Run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
  • Close the manifold valves and verify the system holds vacuum for at least 15 minutes.
  • If vacuum drops, stop and find the leak before charging.

Step 17: Recharge the A/C System

  • Use a refrigerant scale 0.1 oz resolution and charge the system with R-134a refrigerant by the exact weight shown on the underhood A/C label.
  • Start with the engine off and add refrigerant into the vacuum through the low side as a liquid only if your equipment supports controlled charging.
  • Start the engine, set A/C to MAX, blower high, and doors open.
  • Finish charging through the low side as vapor if needed.
  • Do not overcharge. Too much refrigerant can damage the compressor.

  • Start the engine and let it idle with A/C on MAX.
  • Confirm the compressor clutch engages smoothly and the belt runs straight.
  • Check the A/C line fittings for oily residue, bubbles, or hissing.
  • Verify cold air from the center vents after several minutes of operation.
  • Use the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to confirm pressures are stable and appropriate for ambient temperature.
  • If the old compressor failed with metal debris, do not run the system until the contaminated parts are replaced and the system is properly cleaned.
