🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant
- Connect the R-1234yf recovery station to the high- and low-side service ports according to the machine instructions.
- Use the R-1234yf recovery station to recover the complete refrigerant charge.
- Confirm both sides remain near 0 psi before disconnecting the equipment. Pressure returning afterward indicates refrigerant remains in the system.
- Never loosen a charged refrigerant line.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal nut.
- Remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
- Wait at least three minutes before working around electrical connectors.
Step 3: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack at the designated front-center lifting point and raise your Ridgeline.
- Place both jack stands beneath the reinforced front side support points, then lower the vehicle onto them.
- Use the floor jack to lift slightly and verify the stands are stable before going underneath.
Step 4: Remove the Right Front Wheel and Splash Shields
- Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the right-front wheel nuts.

- Use a trim-clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the right-front inner splash-shield and lower-cover fasteners needed for compressor access.

Step 5: Remove the Accessory Drive Belt
- Photograph or sketch the belt routing before removal.
- Place a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar on the automatic belt tensioner. An automatic tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that maintains belt tension.

- Release the tensioner gently. Do not allow it to snap back.

Step 8: Remove the Old Compressor
- Support the compressor with one hand; it is heavier than it appears.
- Use a 12mm or 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and extensions to loosen the compressor mounting bolts evenly.
- Remove the lower bolts first and the easiest-to-reach upper bolt last.
- Guide the compressor out through the lower opening without striking the radiator, condenser, or refrigerant lines.
- Retain any locating sleeves or brackets unless replacements are included.
Step 9: Check for Internal Compressor Damage
- Pour the old compressor oil into the graduated measuring cup while rotating the compressor hub by hand.
- Inspect the oil for shiny metal particles, gray sludge, or black contamination.
- If metal debris is present, stop the repair. The parallel-flow condenser cannot be reliably flushed and should be replaced along with the receiver/drier; inspect or replace the expansion valve as well.
- Use the same measuring cup to determine how much oil came from the old compressor.
Step 10: Set the New Compressor Oil Quantity
- Read the compressor supplier instructions before removing any shipping plugs.
- If the new compressor is prefilled, drain and measure its oil with the graduated measuring cup unless the supplier specifically prohibits this.
- Add only the under-hood-label-approved oil type. Match the old compressor’s measured quantity unless other components were replaced and the Honda oil-balancing procedure specifies additional oil.
- Do not automatically add a full system oil charge to a prefilled compressor. Excess oil reduces cooling and can damage the compressor.
- Rotate the new compressor hub by hand approximately ten turns to distribute the oil.
Step 11: Install the New Compressor
- Position the compressor against its mounting bracket without using the bolts to pull it into alignment.
- Start every mounting bolt by hand several turns to prevent crossed threads.
- Use a 12mm or 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts evenly to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
- Confirm the compressor sits squarely against every mounting surface.
Step 12: Install New Line O-Rings
- Verify each new O-ring matches the old O-ring’s diameter and thickness.
- Lightly wet the new O-rings with the specified clean compressor oil. Do not use grease.
- Install the O-rings by hand and push each refrigerant line straight into its compressor port.
- Start the retaining bolts by hand, then use the correct 10mm or 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten them to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the line bolts; the aluminum fittings can distort.
Step 13: Reconnect the Wiring and Belt
- Push the compressor electrical connector together by hand until its lock clicks.
- Secure the harness in its original retaining clip and keep it clear of the belt.
- Route the drive belt according to the routing diagram or your reference photograph.
- Use the 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner, then place the belt over the final pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly and inspect every pulley to confirm all belt ribs are seated in their grooves.
Step 14: Reinstall the Shields and Wheel

- Use the 22mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Evacuate and Leak-Test the System
- Connect the R-1234yf recovery and recharge station to both service ports.
- Use the vacuum pump to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes, or longer in humid conditions.
- Close the valves and perform the equipment manufacturer’s vacuum-decay test. A loss of vacuum indicates a leak or trapped moisture.
- Repair any leak before adding refrigerant.
Step 16: Recharge by Weight
- Use the digital refrigerant scale and R-1234yf recharge station to add the exact refrigerant weight printed on the under-hood label.
- Do not charge by pressure alone. Ambient temperature changes pressure readings.

Step 17: Reconnect the Battery
