🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the refrigerant
- Use the refrigerant identifier to verify that the system contains the refrigerant shown on the under-hood label.
- Connect the matching recovery/recharge machine and recover the complete refrigerant charge according to the machine instructions.
- Confirm both sides of the system remain at zero pressure before disconnecting the machine.
- Record recovered weight to help identify leaks.
Step 2: Disconnect electrical power
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal nut.
- Remove the negative cable and position it where it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
Step 3: Raise and support the vehicle
- Place the floor jack beneath the front-center lifting point and raise your Optima.
- Position the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points, then lower the vehicle onto them.
- Gently push the vehicle to confirm it is stable before working underneath.
Step 4: Remove the lower engine cover
- Use a trim-clip removal tool to release the plastic retainers.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower-cover fasteners.
- Lower the cover and arrange its fasteners in removal order.
Step 5: Remove the serpentine belt
- Photograph or sketch the belt routing before removal.
- Fit the serpentine-belt tool and 17mm socket onto the automatic tensioner. The tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
- Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension, slide the belt off the compressor pulley, and slowly release the tool.
- Remove the belt if it is being replaced; otherwise secure it away from oil and dirt.
Step 6: Disconnect the compressor wiring
- Press the locking tab by hand and unplug the compressor electrical connector.
- Inspect the connector for melted plastic, loose terminals, oil contamination, or damaged wiring.
Step 7: Disconnect the refrigerant lines
- Place the drain pan beneath the compressor to catch compressor oil.
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet to remove the suction and discharge line retaining bolts.
- Pull each line straight away without bending or twisting it.
- Immediately seal the compressor and vehicle lines with A/C line caps and plugs.
- Remove and discard both old O-rings. Never reuse A/C sealing rings.
Step 8: Remove the old compressor
- Support the compressor with one hand because it is heavier than it appears.
- Use a 14mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Lower the compressor carefully without striking the radiator, hoses, or wiring.
Step 9: Check for internal compressor damage
- Use the drain pan and graduated measuring cylinder to drain oil from the old compressor while slowly turning its hub by hand.
- Inspect the oil for silver particles, dark sludge, or burnt material.
- If metal debris is present, do not install only a compressor. Replace the condenser and expansion valve, clean approved reusable lines, and follow the replacement-compressor manufacturer’s contamination procedure.
- Debris left behind can destroy the new compressor.
Step 10: Balance the compressor oil
- Read the replacement compressor instructions to determine whether it is shipped dry or prefilled.
- Use the graduated measuring cylinder to measure oil removed from the old compressor.
- Using only the oil type printed on the under-hood label, adjust the new compressor to the replacement manufacturer’s specified oil balance.
- Do not add a full-system oil charge unless the entire system has been emptied or replaced.
- Turn the new compressor hub by hand approximately 10 revolutions to distribute the oil internally.
Step 11: Install the new compressor
- Lift the new compressor into its bracket and start every mounting bolt by hand.
- Use a 14mm socket to seat the bolts evenly.
- Use the torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 20-25 Nm (15-18 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Connect the refrigerant lines
- Lightly coat both new O-rings with the exact compressor oil specified on the under-hood label.
- Install each O-ring without twisting it, then align the refrigerant lines squarely against the compressor.
- Start the retaining bolts by hand to avoid damaged threads.
- Use the torque wrench and 12mm socket to tighten the line retaining bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the fittings; the O-rings create the seal.
Step 13: Reconnect the compressor and belt
- Push the electrical connector into place by hand until its lock clicks.
- Route the belt according to your photograph or routing diagram.
- Use the serpentine-belt tool and 17mm socket to rotate the tensioner, place the belt over the final pulley, and slowly release the tensioner.
- Use the LED work light to verify every belt rib is correctly seated in every grooved pulley.
Step 14: Evacuate and leak-test the system
- Connect the recovery/recharge machine, vacuum pump, and digital micron gauge using equipment approved for the labeled refrigerant.
- Evacuate the system to 500 microns or lower and isolate it for at least 10 minutes.
- Do not recharge if vacuum rises rapidly. Locate and repair the leak first.
- A vacuum test does not replace a pressure leak test when equipment or local regulations require one.
Step 15: Recharge by exact weight
