🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Use an A/C refrigerant recovery machine connected to the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Recover all R-134a refrigerant from the system before loosening any A/C line.
  • Confirm both manifold gauge readings are at 0 psi before opening the system.
  • Never vent refrigerant.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery cable clamp.
  • Move the cable away from the battery post so it cannot spring back and touch.

Step 3: Remove Lower Access Panels If Needed

  • Use a 10mm socket and plastic trim clip remover to remove any lower splash shield fasteners blocking access to the compressor.
  • Set the clips and bolts aside in order.
  • Cardboard trays help organize bolts.

Step 4: Release the Serpentine Belt Tension

  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 14mm wrench on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley only.
  • If replacing the belt, remove it fully and note the routing before removal.

Step 5: Unplug the Compressor Electrical Connector

  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the compressor clutch connector lock.
  • Pull the connector straight off the compressor.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Disconnect the A/C Lines From the Compressor

  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the A/C suction and discharge line retaining bolts from the compressor.
  • Gently wiggle the lines free by hand.
  • Use shop towels to catch small oil drips.
  • Cap or cover the open lines immediately with clean shop towels to keep dirt and moisture out.

Step 7: Remove the Compressor Mounting Bolts

  • Support the compressor with one hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension as needed to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Lower the compressor out carefully.
  • The compressor is heavier than it looks, so keep a firm grip.

Step 8: Measure Oil From the Old Compressor

  • Drain the old compressor oil into a PAG oil measuring cup.
  • Rotate the compressor hub by hand while draining to help remove trapped oil.
  • Record the amount removed.
  • Add the same amount of fresh PAG 46 refrigerant oil to the new compressor unless the compressor supplier gives a different instruction.
  • If the old compressor is empty or failed violently, the full system oil balance must be corrected using Toyota service procedures.

Step 9: Prepare the New Compressor

  • Use an O-ring pick set to remove the old O-rings from the A/C lines.
  • Install new O-rings from the A/C compressor line O-ring kit.
  • Lightly coat the new O-rings with clean PAG 46 refrigerant oil.
  • Do not use engine oil, grease, or silicone on A/C O-rings.

Step 10: Install the New Compressor

  • Position the new compressor onto the engine bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, and torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) unless your replacement compressor instructions specify otherwise.

Step 11: Reconnect the A/C Lines

  • Seat the A/C suction and discharge lines squarely into the compressor ports by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket to install the line retaining bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the A/C line bolts.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The aluminum threads can strip easily.

Step 12: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Push the compressor clutch connector on by hand until it clicks.
  • Lightly tug the connector to confirm it is locked.

Step 13: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool or 14mm wrench to rotate the belt tensioner.
  • Route the belt over the A/C compressor pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.
  • Misaligned belts shred quickly.

Step 14: Reinstall Lower Panels

  • Use the plastic trim clip remover to align any splash shield clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the lower splash shield bolts.
  • Snug the small shield bolts gently. Do not overtighten plastic-mounted hardware.

Step 15: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the clamp until it is secure and cannot rotate by hand.

Step 16: Evacuate the A/C System

  • Connect the A/C manifold gauge set for R-134a to the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Connect the A/C vacuum pump to the manifold gauge center hose.
  • Run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
  • Close the manifold valves and verify the system holds vacuum for at least 10 minutes.
  • If vacuum drops, stop and repair the leak before charging.

Step 17: Recharge the A/C System

  • Place the R-134a refrigerant container on a digital refrigerant scale.
  • Charge the system with the exact amount listed on your Tacoma’s under-hood A/C label.
  • Start with the engine off for the initial charge through the low side if the equipment instructions allow it.
  • Start the engine, set A/C to MAX COOL, blower high, and doors open.
  • Continue charging through the low side only until the specified weight is reached.
  • Do not charge by pressure alone. Charge by weight.

  • ✅ Let the engine idle with A/C on MAX COOL for 5-10 minutes.
  • ✅ Confirm the compressor clutch engages and cycles normally.
