🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant
- Connect an R-134a A/C recovery machine to the high-side and low-side service ports using the A/C manifold gauge set.
- Recover the refrigerant until the machine confirms the system is empty.
- Confirm both gauge readings are at 0 psi before opening the system.
- Do not loosen lines under pressure.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Pilot.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Verify the vehicle is stable before working underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove the lower splash shield clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any splash shield bolts.
- Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Take a photo of the belt routing before removal.
- Use a serpentine belt tool with a 14mm adapter on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt fully if replacing it.
Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector
- Locate the A/C compressor clutch connector on the compressor body.
- Use a flathead screwdriver only if needed to gently release the connector lock.
- Pull the connector straight off by the plastic body, not by the wires.
Step 6: Disconnect the A/C Lines
- Place shop towels under the compressor line connections.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket, depending on the line bolt fitted, to remove the refrigerant line retaining bolt from the compressor.
- Pull the suction and discharge line block straight away from the compressor.
- Use an O-ring pick set to remove the old O-rings from the line fittings.
- Cap or plug the open A/C lines immediately with A/C line caps or plugs.
- Keep dirt and moisture out.
Step 7: Remove the A/C Compressor
- Support the compressor with one hand from below.
- Use a 12mm socket, 14mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Lower the compressor carefully out from the bottom of the engine bay.
- Keep the old compressor upright so oil does not spill unexpectedly.
Step 8: Measure Compressor Oil
- Drain oil from the old compressor into a clean measuring container through the line ports.
- Rotate the old compressor clutch plate by hand several turns while draining.
- Drain oil from the new compressor if it arrives prefilled and adjust the amount.
- Add Honda-compatible PAG refrigerant oil to the new compressor equal to the amount drained from the old compressor, unless the compressor supplier gives a different instruction.
- Use shop towels to clean any spilled oil.
Step 9: Install the New A/C Compressor
- Lift the new compressor into position from below.
- Start all compressor mounting bolts by hand first.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket with a torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Do not force the compressor against the bracket. It should sit flat.
Step 10: Reconnect the A/C Lines
- Install new O-rings from the A/C compressor line O-ring seal kit onto the suction and discharge line fittings.
- Lightly coat each O-ring with clean PAG refrigerant oil.
- Remove the A/C line caps or plugs.
- Push the line block straight onto the compressor ports.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with a torque wrench to tighten the A/C line retaining bolt to Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the A/C compressor clutch electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
Step 11: Replace the Receiver/Drier or Desiccant Element
- Locate the receiver/drier or desiccant service section on the condenser assembly at the front of your Pilot.
- Use a 10mm socket and plastic trim clip remover to move any intake ducting, upper cover, or access trim as needed.
- Use the correct socket from the 10mm-14mm range to remove the drier retaining fastener or cap, depending on the fitted condenser design.
- Remove the old receiver/drier or desiccant element.
- Install the new receiver/drier or desiccant element quickly to limit moisture exposure.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the retaining fastener or cap snugly to the condenser supplier specification if provided.
- Moisture ruins A/C performance.
Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your belt routing photo.
- Use the serpentine belt tool with 14mm adapter to rotate the belt tensioner.
- Slide the belt over the final pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly.
- Check every pulley groove with a flashlight to make sure the belt is fully seated.
Step 13: Evacuate the A/C System
- Connect the R-134a A/C manifold gauge set to the high-side and low-side service ports.
- Connect the vacuum pump to the manifold gauge set center hose.
- Run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
- Close the manifold valves and turn off the vacuum pump.
- Watch the gauges for 10-15 minutes. Vacuum should hold steady.
- If vacuum drops, stop and find the leak before charging.
Step 14: Recharge the A/C System
- Place the R-134a refrigerant container on a digital refrigerant scale.
- Charge the exact refrigerant weight shown on your Pilot’s under-hood A/C label.
- Start charging through the low-side service port using the A/C manifold gauge set.
- When safe to do so, start the engine, set A/C to MAX, blower to high, and windows open.
- Continue charging until the scale shows the specified total amount has entered the system.
- Close the manifold valves and disconnect the service couplers.
Step 15: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Raise the splash shield into position.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover by hand to reinstall the clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield bolts.
- Tighten the splash shield bolts snugly. Do not overtighten plastic shield fasteners.
Step 16: Reconnect the Battery and Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise your Pilot slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the battery terminal to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
