🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant
- Use an A/C recovery machine to recover the refrigerant from the system.
- If you do not have this machine, have a shop recover the refrigerant first, then bring your HR-V home for the compressor replacement.
- Confirm both high-side and low-side pressures are at 0 psi before loosening any A/C line.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the front of your HR-V.
- Set it securely on jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Wear safety glasses before working underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove the plastic clips from the lower engine splash shield.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any lower shield bolts.
- Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
- Keep clips grouped together.
Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Take a photo of the belt routing before removal.
- Use a 17mm serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner and rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner. Do not let it snap back.
- If the belt is cracked, glazed, or noisy, replace it now.
Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector
- Use your fingers to press the lock tab on the A/C compressor clutch connector.
- If it is stuck, gently help the tab with a plastic trim clip remover.
- Move the harness aside so it cannot get pinched during removal.
Step 6: Disconnect the A/C Lines
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to remove the bolt holding the suction and discharge line block to the compressor.
- Carefully pull the line block straight away from the compressor.
- Use a line cap plug set to cap the open compressor ports and A/C lines immediately.
- Use an O-ring pick set to remove the old O-rings from the A/C line fittings.
- Do not reuse old O-rings.
Step 7: Remove the Old Compressor
- Support the compressor with one hand.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Lower the compressor out from the bottom of the engine bay.
- Do not spill compressor oil on painted surfaces.
Step 8: Measure Compressor Oil
- Drain oil from the old compressor into a clean measuring container.
- Drain shipping oil from the new compressor if instructed by the compressor supplier.
- Add the same amount of fresh PAG compressor oil to the new compressor that came out of the old one.
- If the old compressor had a catastrophic internal failure, follow the compressor supplier’s full-system oil balance instructions.
- Turn the new compressor clutch hub by hand 10 times to distribute oil before installation.
Step 9: Install the New Compressor
- Lift the new compressor into position from below.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to snug the mounting bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 5-80 Nm to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to Torque to 24 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the A/C Lines
- Lightly coat the new O-rings with clean PAG compressor oil.
- Install the new O-rings onto the suction and discharge line fittings by hand.
- Remove the caps from the lines and compressor only when ready to connect them.
- Push the line block straight onto the compressor ports.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to install the line retaining bolt.
- Use a torque wrench 5-80 Nm to tighten the A/C line bolt to Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the A/C compressor clutch connector in until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector by hand to confirm it is locked.
- Make sure the wire harness is routed away from the belt and pulley.
Step 12: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt according to your photo from Step 4.
- Use a 17mm serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
- Slide the belt over the final pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Check every pulley groove by sight and hand. The belt must sit fully in each groove.
Step 13: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Raise the lower splash shield into place.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to reinstall the plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the lower shield bolts.
- Snug the shield bolts gently. Do not overtighten plastic panels.
Step 14: Evacuate the A/C System
- Connect the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to the high-side and low-side service ports.
- Connect the center hose to the A/C vacuum pump 2-stage.
- Open both manifold valves and run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
- Close both valves and turn off the pump.
- Let the system sit for 10-15 minutes. The vacuum should hold steady.
- If vacuum drops, there is a leak that must be fixed before charging.
Step 15: Recharge the System
- Use an A/C refrigerant scale to charge the exact refrigerant weight listed on the under-hood label.
- Charge through the low-side port using the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a.
- Start the engine only after the initial safe charge amount has entered the system.
- Turn A/C to MAX COOL, blower high, and doors open.
- Finish charging by weight. Do not guess by pressure alone.
Step 16: Final Leak and Operation Check
- Use safety glasses and inspect the compressor line connections for oil residue or hissing.
- Confirm the compressor engages and disengages normally.
- Check that the center vents blow cold air after a few minutes.
- Remove the manifold gauge set carefully and reinstall the service port caps by hand.
