Your A/C compressor pumps refrigerant through the system. On this truck, the system must be fully recovered before removal, then evacuated and recharged after installation. This is not a simple bolt-on job because the refrigerant circuit has to be handled correctly to avoid injury and component damage.

  • Refrigerant can cause frostbite and eye injury. Do not open the A/C system until the refrigerant has been professionally recovered.
  • Do not vent refrigerant to the atmosphere.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the compressor wiring and belt drive.
  • The compressor may be hot if the truck was recently run.
  • Replace the refrigerant oil only with the correct oil type for this system.
  • If the system was contaminated by compressor failure, the condenser and expansion device may also need replacement.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered before opening the system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Read the oil amount on the replacement compressor and match it to the system requirements.
  • If the old compressor failed internally, plan to flush the lines and replace the receiver drier or accumulator.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the refrigerant

  • Use a refrigerant recovery machine to remove all refrigerant from the system.
  • Confirm the gauges show zero pressure before opening any A/C line.
  • Never crack a line on a charged system.

Step 2: Disconnect battery power

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Keep the cable isolated so it cannot spring back into contact.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a belt tensioner tool or a breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slip the serpentine belt off the compressor pulley and remove it from the engine.
  • Take a quick belt routing photo first.

Step 4: Unplug the compressor

  • Release the electrical connector lock and unplug the compressor clutch connector by hand.
  • Inspect the connector for corrosion or oil intrusion.

Step 5: Disconnect the refrigerant lines

  • Place a drain pan under the compressor area.
  • Use a line wrench set to loosen the A/C line fittings.
  • Remove the line bolts carefully and cap the open lines immediately.
  • Remove and discard the old O-rings.

Step 6: Remove the compressor

  • Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Support the compressor with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Lower the compressor out of the engine bay.

Step 7: Prepare the new compressor

  • Drain and measure the oil from the old compressor if instructed by the compressor supplier.
  • Add the correct amount of fresh refrigerant oil to the new compressor.
  • Install new O-rings on the line fittings and lightly coat them with clean refrigerant oil.
  • Use only the correct oil type for this system.

Step 8: Install the new compressor

  • Position the compressor and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 41 N·m (30 ft-lbs) for typical compressor mounting bolts unless the replacement compressor instructions specify otherwise.
  • Reconnect the refrigerant lines and tighten the line bolts.
  • Torque to 18 N·m (13 ft-lbs) for typical A/C line fasteners unless otherwise specified.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the belt

  • Use the belt tensioner tool to rotate the tensioner.
  • Route the serpentine belt correctly on all pulleys.
  • Make sure the belt sits fully in every groove.

Step 10: Evacuate and recharge the system

  • Use an A/C vacuum pump and A/C manifold gauge set to evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes.
  • Hold vacuum and check for leaks before recharging.
  • Recharge the system with the exact refrigerant amount listed on the underhood label.
  • Charge by weight, not by pressure alone.

Step 11: Restore power and test

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and turn the A/C on max.
  • Check compressor engagement, vent temperature, and line temperatures.
  • Look for leaks at both line fittings and around the compressor body.

  • Verify cold air output after the system stabilizes.
  • Listen for belt squeal or compressor noise.
  • Recheck refrigerant connections for leaks after a short test drive.
  • If cooling is weak, the system may need further diagnosis for the condenser, fan operation, or blend door control.
