  • ⚠️ Do not loosen a refrigerant fitting until gauges confirm both sides are at zero pressure.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before reaching near the starter, belt, compressor connector, or cooling fan.

  • 📋 Park on level pavement, select Park, engage the parking brake, and chock both rear wheels.
  • 📋 Read the underhood A/C label and record the refrigerant type and exact charge weight.
  • 📋 Have a qualified shop recover the refrigerant before bringing your Silverado home, or use certified recovery equipment.
  • 📋 Allow the engine and exhaust to cool completely.
  • 📋 Photograph the serpentine-belt routing or locate the factory routing diagram.
  • 📋 Disconnect the negative battery cable with the appropriate metric socket and isolate it from the terminal.
  • 📋 Do not add the entire bottle of oil. The new compressor is oil-filled, so its contents must be checked and balanced against the removed oil and replaced components.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Connect the correct A/C manifold gauge set and recovery machine to the service ports.
  • Recover the refrigerant according to the machine manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Confirm both gauges remain at zero pressure before disconnecting any refrigerant line.
  • If you don't own certified equipment, have an A/C shop perform the recovery. Do not substitute an empty can or vacuum pump.

Step 2: Raise and Secure the Truck

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack at an approved front lifting point.
  • Place both 3-ton jack stands under approved frame support points and lower your Silverado onto them.
  • Give the vehicle a firm stability check before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Shield

  • Use the matching metric socket and trim-clip tool to remove the lower splash shield or skid shield where equipped.
  • Keep bolts and clips arranged by location.

Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Use the 15mm serpentine-belt wrench on the tensioner and rotate it far enough to release belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the compressor pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or refrigerant-oil contamination.
  • Photograph belt routing before removal.

Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Electrically

  • Verify the negative battery cable remains disconnected.
  • Release the locking tab by hand and unplug the compressor electrical connector.
  • Use the trim-clip tool where necessary to release the harness retainers without pulling on the wires.

Step 6: Disconnect the Refrigerant Manifold

  • Place the clean drain pan below the compressor.
  • Clean dirt from the compressor fittings before opening them.
  • Use the appropriate metric socket to remove the suction and discharge manifold retaining bolt.
  • Pull the manifold straight away without twisting or bending the aluminum lines.
  • Remove the old sealing washers with the refrigerant-rated O-ring pick.
  • Immediately cap the open lines and compressor ports.
  • Do not reuse the old sealing washers.

Step 7: Remove the Compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand or a stable support.
  • Use the appropriate metric socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Note each bolt location because bolt lengths may differ.
  • Lower the compressor carefully through the available space without striking the refrigerant lines.

Step 8: Inspect for Contamination

  • Drain the old compressor into the graduated measuring cylinder while rotating its hub by hand.
  • Inspect the oil for gray metallic paste, shiny particles, black debris, or burnt odor.
  • If metal debris is present, do not install only the compressor. Replace the accumulator and expansion device, inspect or replace the condenser as required, and professionally clean approved flushable lines.
  • Parallel-flow condensers generally cannot be reliably cleared after major compressor debris contamination.

Step 9: Balance the Compressor Oil

  • Keep the new compressor upright and remove its shipping caps only when ready to measure it.
  • Drain and measure the shipping oil using the graduated oil measuring cylinder if the compressor instructions require it.
  • Add back only the correct type and calculated quantity of refrigerant oil.
  • Account for oil added with any accumulator, condenser, evaporator, or line being replaced.
  • Follow the compressor manufacturer’s oil-balancing instructions exactly. Do not assume “oil filled” means the system’s final quantity is correct.
  • Rotate the compressor hub clockwise by hand approximately ten turns to distribute oil internally.

Step 10: Install the New Compressor

  • Position the new compressor against its mounting bracket without using the bolts to pull it into alignment.
  • Start every mounting bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the metric socket and torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts evenly.
  • Use the exact mounting-bolt torque supplied with the compressor or current Chevrolet service information. Compressor design and bolt position determine the specification.

Step 11: Install New Sealing Washers

  • Compare the new sealing washers with the originals before installation.
  • Lightly wet the new seals with the same clean refrigerant oil used in the system.
  • Install each seal in its correct suction or discharge position without twisting it.
  • Seat the line manifold squarely against the compressor.
  • Start the retaining bolt by hand, then tighten it with the metric socket and inch-pound torque wrench.
  • Use the compressor manufacturer’s manifold-bolt torque. Over-tightening can distort the manifold or crush the sealing washers.

Step 12: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Push the compressor connector into place by hand until its lock clicks.
  • Secure the harness in its original clips with the trim-clip tool.
  • Verify the harness cannot contact the pulley, belt, exhaust, or steering components.

Step 13: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around every pulley according to the factory routing diagram.
  • Use the 15mm serpentine-belt wrench to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slip the belt over the final pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that every belt rib is fully seated in every grooved pulley.

Step 14: Reinstall the Lower Shield

  • Use the appropriate metric socket and trim-clip tool to reinstall the lower shield and its retainers.
  • Tighten the shield fasteners until seated. Do not strip plastic retainers or speed nuts.

Step 15: Evacuate the A/C System

  • Reconnect the correct manifold gauge set and vacuum pump.
  • Evacuate the system for at least 45 minutes. Hot, humid weather may require additional evacuation time.
  • Close the manifold valves and isolate the vacuum pump.
  • Verify the system holds deep vacuum for at least 15 minutes.
  • If vacuum rises, locate and repair the leak before charging.

Step 16: Recharge by Weight

  • Place the correct refrigerant container on the electronic refrigerant scale.
  • Charge only the refrigerant type shown on the underhood label.
  • Add the exact label-specified weight. Do not charge by pressure alone.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the appropriate metric socket after all engine-compartment tools are removed.

  • ✅ Start the engine and initially leave the A/C switched off while checking belt tracking and compressor mounting.
  • ✅ Switch the A/C on, select maximum cooling, use recirculation mode, and set the blower to medium-high.
  • ✅ Check that the compressor operates smoothly without grinding, belt squeal, or heavy vibration.
  • ✅ Use the manifold gauge set to verify operating pressures appropriate for ambient temperature and the specified refrigerant.
