🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Connect an R-134a recovery machine to the high- and low-side service ports.
  • Recover the complete charge according to the machine instructions.
  • Confirm that both gauges remain at zero before disconnecting the equipment.
  • Do not continue if system pressure returns. Refrigerant may remain trapped in the system.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Switch the ignition off and keep the key away from the vehicle.
  • Use the matching wrench from the 8mm-15mm combination wrench set to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Remove and isolate the negative cable so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Explorer

  • Place the 3-ton floor jack under the approved front lifting point.
  • Raise the front and position the 3-ton jack stands under the approved support points.
  • Lower the vehicle onto the stands and gently test its stability.
  • Use the trim-clip removal tool and matching socket to remove the lower splash shield and access panels.

Step 4: Release the Drive Belt

  • Compare the belt routing with your photograph or the routing diagram in the engine compartment.
  • Fit the serpentine-belt tensioner tool onto the tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner only in its normal release direction and slide the belt off the compressor pulley.

Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Wiring

Step 6: Disconnect the Refrigerant Manifold

Step 7: Remove the Old Compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand or a stable support.
  • Use the matching socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3-inch extension to remove the accessible mounting bolts.
  • Remove the remaining mounting bolts while supporting the compressor’s weight.
  • Lower the compressor carefully through the available lower opening.
  • Keep it upright until its oil is measured.

Step 8: Inspect for Internal Failure

  • Pour the old compressor oil into a clean measuring container.
  • Inspect the oil under bright light for gray paste, glitter, aluminum particles, or black contamination.
  • If metal is present, stop the installation. The condenser, receiver-drier or desiccant, and expansion devices require inspection or replacement.
  • Never flush a replacement compressor, accumulator, receiver-drier, or expansion device.
  • Metal glitter means the system needs more work.

Step 9: Prepare the New Compressor

  • Keep the shipping plugs installed while positioning the new compressor.
  • Check the compressor manufacturer’s instructions to determine whether it arrives dry or prefilled.
  • Use only oil meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B. Ford identifies this as PAG refrigerant compressor oil. fordservicecontent.com
  • Balance the oil according to the measured amount removed and the compressor instructions. Don’t pour the full 7.3 fl oz system capacity into the compressor.
  • Turn the compressor hub by hand approximately ten complete revolutions after the correct oil amount is installed.

Step 10: Install the New Compressor

  • Lift the compressor into position and start every mounting bolt by hand.
  • Use the matching socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to seat the bolts evenly.
  • Use the 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to the current Ford service specification for the exact bolt locations.
  • Do not guess the torque. Thread size and attachment points can differ, and an incorrect value can damage the aluminum housing.

Step 11: Reconnect the A/C Lines

  • Remove the line caps only when you’re ready to connect the manifold.
  • Coat the new correct-size O-rings lightly with the specified PAG oil.
  • Install the O-rings without twisting, stretching, or using petroleum grease.
  • Push the manifold squarely against the compressor and start its fastener by hand.
  • Use the inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the manifold fastener to the current Ford service specification.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until its lock clicks.

Step 12: Reinstall the Belt

  • Route the belt around every pulley according to the original diagram.
  • Use the serpentine-belt tensioner tool to rotate the tensioner and place the belt over the final pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.
  • Check every pulley and confirm each belt rib sits completely inside its matching groove.

Step 13: Reassemble the Lower Covers
