🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the refrigerant
- Connect an automotive R-134a recovery and recharge station to the high- and low-pressure service ports.
- Use the station’s recovery function to remove the complete refrigerant charge according to the equipment instructions.
- Confirm both gauges remain at zero pressure before disconnecting any refrigerant line.
- If you do not have recovery equipment, have a qualified A/C shop complete this step.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Open the hood and use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Remove the clamp and position it where it cannot touch the battery post.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before continuing.
Step 3: Raise and support the vehicle
- Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the front-center lifting point, then lower your Avalon onto 2-ton jack stands at the reinforced side support points.

Step 4: Remove the lower engine covers

Step 6: Disconnect the compressor wiring
- Use a small flat-tip screwdriver only if needed to lift the connector lock gently.
- Press the release tab and unplug the compressor electrical connector by holding the connector body, not the wires.
- Release the wiring harness from its compressor retaining clips with the plastic trim-clip removal tool.
Step 7: Disconnect the refrigerant lines
- Put on safety glasses and gloves, then verify the system still reads zero pressure on the R-134a manifold gauge set.
- Use the correctly fitting metric socket from the 8mm-19mm socket set to remove the suction- and discharge-line retaining bolts.
- Pull each line straight away from the compressor. Do not twist or sharply bend the aluminum pipes.
- Immediately seal every open line with A/C line caps and plugs.
- Remove and discard both old O-rings. Never reuse refrigerant O-rings.
Step 8: Remove the old compressor
- Support the compressor with one hand because it is heavy and awkward.
- Use a metric socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to loosen the compressor mounting bolts evenly.
- Remove the lower bolts first and the upper bolt last, then carefully lower the compressor through the underside.
- Keep the compressor upright to avoid spilling oil before it can be measured.
Step 9: Inspect for internal compressor damage
- Use the clean graduated measuring cylinder to drain oil from the old compressor through its ports while rotating the clutch hub by hand.
- Inspect the oil for silver particles, dark sludge, or burned material.
- If debris is present, replace the condenser, receiver/drier, and expansion valve before installing the compressor. The condenser’s narrow parallel passages cannot be reliably cleaned after a destructive compressor failure.
- If the old oil is clean, measure and record the amount drained.
Step 10: Balance the compressor oil
- Read the replacement compressor instructions to determine whether it is dry or prefilled with ND-OIL 8.
- Use the clean graduated measuring cylinder to adjust the new compressor so it contains the same amount removed from the old compressor, unless its manufacturer specifies a different balancing method.
- Use only Toyota-spec ND-OIL 8. Keep the oil container sealed because compressor oil rapidly absorbs moisture.
- Turn the new compressor clutch hub by hand approximately 10 revolutions to distribute the oil internally.
- Do not rotate the clutch hub with a powered tool.
Step 11: Install the new compressor
- Lift the compressor into position and start every mounting bolt by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the metric socket, extension, and ratchet to seat the bolts evenly.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Confirm no wiring or hoses are trapped behind the compressor.
Step 12: Reconnect the refrigerant lines
- Lightly coat both new O-rings with clean ND-OIL 8 using a gloved fingertip.
- Install each O-ring in its correct line groove without twisting it.
- Remove the A/C line caps and plugs immediately before connecting each line.
- Push the lines squarely into the compressor and start the retaining bolts by hand.
- Use the inch-pound torque wrench and correctly fitting metric socket to tighten each compressor line bolt to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the line bolts; the aluminum fittings can distort.
Step 13: Reconnect the wiring and drive belt
- Push the electrical connector into the compressor until its lock clicks, then reinstall the harness retainers by hand.
- Route the belt exactly as shown in the routing diagram.
