📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Wrangler on level ground, set the parking brake, and let the engine cool.
  • Have the refrigerant professionally recovered using an R-134a refrigerant recovery machine before opening any A/C line.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Take a photo of the serpentine belt routing before removing it.
  • A manifold gauge set is a hose-and-gauge tool used to measure A/C system pressure and connect the vacuum pump and refrigerant.
  • A vacuum pump removes air and moisture from the A/C system before recharge.
  • A refrigerant scale weighs the exact refrigerant charge so the system is not overfilled or underfilled.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Connect an A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Connect the gauge set to a refrigerant recovery machine R-134a.
  • Recover the refrigerant until the machine confirms the system is empty.
  • Close both manifold valves after recovery is complete.
  • Do not vent refrigerant.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.

Step 3: Remove the Engine Cover if Equipped

  • Lift the engine cover upward by hand if your Wrangler has one installed.
  • Set it aside in a safe place.

Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt from the Compressor Pulley

  • Use a serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.
  • If replacing the belt, remove it fully from all pulleys.
  • Check the belt routing photo.

Step 5: Unplug the Compressor Clutch Connector

  • Locate the electrical connector on the A/C compressor clutch.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or pick tool to release the connector lock tab.
  • Pull the connector straight off by hand.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Disconnect the A/C Lines from the Compressor

  • Place a drain pan 2-quart under the compressor area to catch small oil drips.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and ratchet to remove the A/C line retaining bolt at the compressor.
  • Gently pull the suction and discharge line block away from the compressor by hand.
  • Use an A/C line disconnect cap plug kit to cap the open lines and compressor ports immediately.
  • Use a pick tool to remove the old seals from the line block.
  • Do not reuse old A/C seals.

Step 7: Remove the Compressor Mounting Bolts

  • Support the compressor with one hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Lower the compressor carefully out of the bracket area.
  • Keep the old compressor upright to avoid spilling oil.

Step 8: Measure the Oil from the Old Compressor

  • Remove the shipping caps from the old compressor ports by hand.
  • Turn the old compressor over above a drain pan 2-quart.
  • Rotate the clutch plate by hand several turns to drain as much oil as possible.
  • Measure the drained oil amount using a clean graduated container if available.
  • Add the same amount of fresh PAG 46 refrigerant oil to the new compressor unless the new compressor instructions state it is already filled to system spec.
  • Do not overfill the system with oil.

Step 9: Prepare the New Compressor

  • Keep the new compressor capped until installation to prevent moisture entering.
  • Add the correct amount of PAG 46 refrigerant oil if needed.
  • Rotate the compressor clutch plate by hand 10 turns to distribute oil inside the compressor.

Step 10: Install the New Compressor

  • Position the new A/C compressor with clutch onto the engine bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-80 ft-lb and 15mm socket to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Install New A/C Line Seals

  • Use a pick tool to confirm the old seals are removed from the line block.
  • Lightly coat the new seals from the A/C compressor line seal kit with clean PAG 46 refrigerant oil.
  • Install the new seals by hand onto the line block.
  • Do not cut, twist, or pinch the seals.

Step 12: Reconnect the A/C Lines

  • Remove the caps from the compressor ports and line block by hand.
  • Seat the A/C line block squarely against the compressor by hand.
  • Start the retaining bolt by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and ratchet to snug the bolt.
  • Use a torque wrench inch-pound and 13mm socket to tighten the A/C line retaining bolt to Torque to 20 Nm (177 in-lbs).

Step 13: Reconnect the Compressor Clutch Connector

  • Push the compressor clutch connector on by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
  • Route the wiring away from the belt and pulley.

Step 14: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only as a pointer to check that the belt ribs sit fully in every pulley groove.
  • Do not pry on the belt.

Step 15: Evacuate the A/C System

  • Connect the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a to the high-side and low-side service ports.
  • Connect the center hose to the vacuum pump 2-stage R-134a.
  • Open both manifold valves and run the vacuum pump for at least 30-45 minutes.
  • Close both valves and turn off the vacuum pump.
  • Watch the gauges for 10-15 minutes. Vacuum should hold steady.
  • If vacuum drops, stop and find the leak before charging.

Step 16: Recharge the A/C System

  • Place the R-134a refrigerant container on a refrigerant scale 0.1 oz accuracy.
  • Connect the refrigerant supply to the center hose of the A/C manifold gauge set R-134a.
  • Purge air from the service hose according to the gauge set instructions.
  • Charge the system with R-134a refrigerant - 1.25 lb / 20 oz.
  • Add refrigerant by weight, not by pressure alone.
  • When charging is complete, close the manifold valves and disconnect the service couplers.

Step 17: Reconnect the Battery and Test Operation

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Start the engine and set the A/C to maximum cold with the blower on high.
  • Watch the compressor clutch. It should cycle on and the center plate should spin when commanded.
  • Listen for abnormal grinding, squealing, or belt noise.
  • Check the A/C line connections for oily residue, which can indicate a leak.

  • ✅ Verify cold air from the center vents after the system stabilizes.
  • ✅ Recheck the compressor line connection for leaks after 10 minutes of A/C operation.
  • ✅ Confirm the serpentine belt tracks straight on all pulleys.
  • ✅ If the compressor failed internally, replace the condenser/receiver-drier and expansion valve before operating the new compressor.
  • ✅ If A/C performance is still poor, inspect for leaks and confirm the refrigerant charge by weight.
