📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the refrigerant
- Put on safety glasses and refrigerant-resistant gloves.
- Connect the R-134a manifold gauge set to the high- and low-pressure service ports. A manifold gauge set controls refrigerant flow and displays both sides of the system pressure.
- Connect the R-134a recovery machine according to its manufacturer’s instructions and recover the complete refrigerant charge.
- Use the manifold gauge set to verify both gauges remain at 0 psi before disconnecting any line.
- Never loosen an A/C fitting to check whether the system is empty.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Remove the negative cable and position it so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
Step 3: Raise and support the vehicle
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Use the floor jack at the specified front lifting point, then support your Explorer on jack stands at the approved front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands and confirm it is stable before going underneath.
Step 4: Remove the lower access panels
- Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and trim-clip removal tool to remove the lower engine splash-shield fasteners.
- Remove the shield and arrange the fasteners by location.
- If additional side access is necessary, use a 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen the right-front wheel nuts before lifting, then remove the wheel after the vehicle is supported.
- Use an 8mm socket and trim-clip removal tool to remove the necessary right-front splash-liner fasteners.
Step 5: Remove the serpentine belt
- Photograph or draw the belt routing before removal.
- Place the serpentine-belt routing tool with 15mm socket on the automatic tensioner. An automatic tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to release belt tension, then slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly. Do not allow it to snap back.
- Inspect the belt and tensioner. Replace the belt if it is cracked, glazed, frayed, or contaminated.
- Keep the belt routed around the upper pulleys.
Step 6: Disconnect the compressor electrically
- Use your fingers to release the compressor electrical-connector lock, then unplug the connector without pulling on its wires.
- Release the wiring harness from any compressor retaining clips by hand.
- Inspect the connector for melted plastic, corrosion, or overheated terminals.
Step 7: Disconnect the refrigerant lines
- Place a clean graduated measuring cup beneath the connection to catch any oil that escapes.
- Use a 10mm socket, 150mm extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the suction and discharge line retaining fastener or fasteners from the compressor manifold.
- Pull the refrigerant-line manifold straight away from the compressor. Do not pry against or bend the aluminum tubes.
- Immediately seal the open lines with the A/C line sealing cap set.
- Use a plastic O-ring pick to remove the old O-rings. Do not scratch the aluminum sealing surfaces.
Step 8: Remove the old compressor
- Support the compressor with one hand because it is heavier than it appears.
- Use a 13mm socket, 150mm extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Lower the compressor carefully through the available lower opening. Do not strike the radiator, condenser, or refrigerant lines.
Step 9: Balance the compressor oil
- Hold the old compressor over the clean graduated measuring cup. Rotate its clutch hub by hand and drain the oil through its ports.
- Measure and record the amount removed.
- Use the clean graduated measuring cup to verify the oil already inside the new compressor according to its supplied instructions.
- Adjust the new compressor to the correct replacement amount using Ford-approved PAG compressor oil. Do not automatically add a full system oil charge.
- Turn the new compressor clutch hub by hand approximately 10 revolutions to distribute the oil.
- If metallic debris, dark sludge, or burnt oil comes out of the old compressor, do not continue with a simple compressor-only repair.
Step 10: Install the new compressor
- Position the new compressor against its mounting bracket without using the bolts to pull it into alignment.
- Start every mounting bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts evenly to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the refrigerant lines
- Use a plastic O-ring pick to confirm no old O-ring remains in either connection.
- Lightly coat the new suction and discharge O-rings with clean Ford-approved PAG compressor oil using a gloved fingertip.
- Install the new O-rings without twisting them, remove the sealing caps, and immediately position the line manifold squarely against the compressor.
- Start the retaining fastener by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the compressor line fastener to 15 Nm (133 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the compressor electrical connector by hand until its lock clicks.
Step 12: Replace the receiver-drier element
- Use the hand tools and procedure supplied with the vehicle-matched receiver-drier or desiccant service kit.
- Keep the new desiccant sealed until immediately before installation. Desiccant is a drying material that absorbs damaging moisture from the refrigerant system.
- Lubricate its new seals lightly with Ford-approved PAG compressor oil and torque its fasteners to the specifications supplied with the matched part.
- Do not leave the system open while completing unrelated work.
Step 13: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt according to the underhood routing diagram, leaving the compressor pulley until last.
- Use the serpentine-belt routing tool with 15mm socket to rotate the tensioner, slide the belt over the compressor pulley, and slowly release the tensioner.
- Use a flashlight and visually check that every belt rib is seated in every grooved pulley.
Step 14: Reinstall the shields and wheel
- Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and trim-clip removal tool to reinstall the splash liner and lower engine shield.
- If removed, place the right-front wheel onto the hub and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use a 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs) after lowering the tire to the ground.
- Use the floor jack to lift your Explorer slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it fully.
Step 15: Reconnect the battery
- Install the negative battery cable by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the battery-terminal clamp to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the clamp.
Step 16: Evacuate and leak-test the system
- Connect the R-134a manifold gauge set and two-stage A/C vacuum pump.
- Open both manifold valves and operate the vacuum pump for at least 45 minutes.
- Close both manifold valves, switch off the pump, and observe the gauges for at least 15 minutes.
- If vacuum decreases, find and repair the leak before charging. Vacuum testing does not replace an electronic leak test.
Step 17: Recharge by exact weight
- Place the R-134a refrigerant container on the electronic refrigerant charging scale.
- Purge air from the charging hose using the manifold gauge set according to the equipment instructions.
- Add exactly the refrigerant weight printed on your Explorer’s underhood A/C label. Never estimate the charge and never charge by can count.
- Keep the high-side manifold valve closed whenever the engine is running.
- If the full charge cannot be added with the engine off, start the engine and complete vapor charging through the low side according to the manifold equipment instructions.

- 🌬️ Start the engine, set the blower to high, select panel vents, engage A/C, and select recirculation.
- 👀 Confirm the compressor operates normally and the belt remains centered with no chirping, wobble, or slipping.
