🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant
- Put on safety glasses and refrigerant-rated gloves.
- Use the R-134a recovery/recycling/recharging machine according to its instructions to recover refrigerant through both service ports.
- Use the R-134a manifold gauge set to confirm both sides remain at 0 psi before opening the system.
- Do not continue if pressure returns. Residual liquid refrigerant may still be evaporating.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the front-center frame crossmember to raise your 4Runner.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the approved left and right front frame support points. Lower the vehicle gently onto them.
- Push lightly on the body to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Front Underbody Shields
- Use the 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the front skid-plate bolts.
- Support the plate with a gloved hand while removing its final bolt.
- Use the 10mm socket and trim-clip removal tool for any additional lower splash-shield fasteners blocking compressor access.
- Keep each shield’s fasteners grouped for correct reassembly.
Step 4: Remove the Accessory Drive Belt
- Use the 14mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar on the automatic belt tensioner. Rotate the tensioner clockwise to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the compressor pulley with a gloved hand, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt and inspect it under the work light for cracks, fraying, glazing, or oil contamination.
- Photograph the belt routing before removal.
Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Wiring
- Use the work light to locate the compressor electrical connector.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to release the connector lock without forcing it.
- Pull on the connector body with nitrile-gloved hands, not on the wires.
Step 6: Disconnect the Refrigerant Lines
- Clean around both compressor line connections with a lint-free cloth while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Use the 10mm socket or 10mm combination wrench, as access permits, to remove the suction- and discharge-line retaining bolts.
- Gently pull each line straight away by hand. Do not bend or pry against the aluminium tubes.
- Use the A/C line cap and plug set immediately on both vehicle lines and compressor ports.
- Remove and discard the old O-rings with the small flat-blade screwdriver. Do not scratch the sealing surfaces.
Step 7: Remove the Old Compressor
- Support the compressor with one gloved hand. It is heavy and awkward when the final fastener is removed.
- Use the 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Lower the compressor carefully through the bottom opening. Do not damage the radiator hose, wiring, or refrigerant lines.
- Keep the old compressor upright until its oil quantity is measured.
Step 8: Check for Internal Compressor Damage
- Use nitrile gloves and inspect the oil from the old compressor under the work light.
- If the oil contains shiny metal, dark grit, or burnt material, stop the installation. Replace the condenser with integrated receiver/drier and expansion valve, then have the reusable lines and evaporator professionally flushed.
- Do not flush a parallel-flow condenser or the replacement compressor.
Step 9: Balance the Compressor Oil
- Use the graduated measuring cylinder to drain the old compressor through its ports while rotating its hub by hand. Record the amount recovered.
- Check whether the new compressor is prefilled. Use the graduated measuring cylinder to adjust its ND-OIL 8 quantity according to the compressor supplier’s instructions and the amount removed from the old unit.
- Do not blindly add a full system oil capacity to a prefilled compressor. Excess oil reduces cooling and can damage the compressor.
- Use gloved hands to rotate the new compressor hub clockwise approximately ten turns. This distributes oil internally before startup.
Step 10: Install the New Compressor
- Lift the new compressor into position from below using gloved hands.
- Start every mounting bolt by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts evenly to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Connect the compressor electrical connector by hand until its lock clicks.
Step 11: Reconnect the Refrigerant Lines
- Use nitrile-gloved fingers to coat both new O-rings lightly with clean ND-OIL 8 compressor oil.
- Install the O-rings without twisting them. Remove the caps and plugs only immediately before connecting each line.
- Seat each refrigerant fitting squarely by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten each line retaining bolt to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the bolts; the aluminium fittings can distort or crack.
Step 12: Reinstall the Accessory Drive Belt
- Route the belt around every pulley using the routing label or your reference photograph.
- Use the 14mm socket and breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slide the belt over the final pulley with a gloved hand, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Use the work light to verify every belt rib is fully seated in every grooved pulley.
Step 13: Evacuate and Leak-Test the System
- Use the R-134a manifold gauge set and 5-CFM vacuum pump to evacuate the system for at least 30-45 minutes.
- Close both manifold valves and switch off the vacuum pump.
- Use the manifold gauge set to monitor vacuum for at least 10 minutes. Any meaningful vacuum loss indicates a leak that must be repaired before charging.
- A vacuum test does not prove every operating-pressure leak is absent; electronic leak testing is recommended after charging.
Step 14: Recharge by Weight
- Use the R-134a recovery/recycling/recharging machine and refrigerant charging scale to install the exact refrigerant mass printed on the underhood A/C label.
- Do not charge by pressure alone. Ambient temperature changes system pressure substantially.
- Follow the charging machine’s instructions for purging air from its hoses before refrigerant enters the system.
Step 15: Reinstall the Shields and Lower the Vehicle
- Use the 10mm socket and trim-clip removal tool to reinstall the lower splash shield and its clips.
- Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to reinstall the factory front skid plate fasteners to 29 Nm (21 ft-lbs).
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise your 4Runner slightly, remove both 3-ton jack stands, and lower it completely.
- Remove the rear wheel chocks by hand.
Step 16: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative terminal fully onto the battery post using nitrile-gloved hands.
- Use the 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal securely. Do not overtighten or deform the terminal.

- ✅ Before starting the engine, use the work light for a final belt-routing and tool check.
- ❄️ Start the engine, set the blower to maximum, select recirculation, and set the temperature to full cold.
- 👀 Watch the compressor and belt from a safe distance. Stop immediately if the belt wanders, squeals, or the compressor makes grinding or knocking noises.
