🔧 Soul - 12V Battery Replacement
Replacing your Soul’s 12V battery is a straightforward job: remove the old battery, clean the connections, and install the new one securely. Doing it the right way prevents no-start issues and avoids damaging the car’s electronics.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves—battery acid is corrosive.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key/fob away from the car.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
- ⚠️ Don’t let a tool touch the battery positive and any metal body part at the same time.
- ⚠️ Batteries are heavy—lift with your legs, not your back.

- Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal felt washers - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Soul on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and locate the battery (front corner of the engine bay).
- If you want to preserve settings, use a 12V memory saver (a small device that keeps power while the battery is out). If you don’t have one, it’s okay—you’ll just reset the clock and some preferences afterward.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Power down and access the battery
- Make sure the ignition is OFF and all lights are OFF.
- Open the hood and visually confirm which battery post is negative (-) (usually black cable) and which is positive (+) (usually under a red cover).
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal
- Use a 10mm socket (or 10mm wrench) to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the battery post, then tuck the cable to the side so it cannot spring back.
- Negative off first prevents accidental shorts.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 5.9 Nm (52 in-lbs)
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal
- If there’s a cover, open it by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp off the battery post and move it safely aside.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 5.9 Nm (52 in-lbs)
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Locate the battery hold-down at the base of the battery.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the hold-down bolt(s) and bracket.
- Set the bracket and bolt(s) aside where they won’t get lost.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs)
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Lift the battery straight up and out. Keep it level to avoid any seepage.
- Place it on the ground (not on carpet or inside the cabin).
Step 6: Clean the terminals and tray
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until shiny metal is visible.
- Wipe the battery tray area with shop rags.
- Install battery terminal felt washers (if included) onto the posts when the new battery is in place.
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one (positive and negative on the correct sides).
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 12mm socket, then torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)
- Reconnect the positive (+) clamp first using the 10mm socket, then torque to 5.9 Nm (52 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the negative (-) clamp last using the 10mm socket, then torque to 5.9 Nm (52 in-lbs).
- Apply battery terminal anti-corrosion spray to help prevent future corrosion.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Soul and confirm it cranks strongly and runs normally.
- Set the clock and re-save radio presets if they were lost.
- If the idle seems rough at first, let it idle for 5 minutes with all accessories OFF, then drive normally for a short trip.
- Check that the battery is secure (it should not move by hand).
