🔧 Renegade - 12V Battery Replacement
Replacing the 12V battery restores reliable starting and prevents random electrical issues. On your Renegade, the battery sits in the engine bay; the job is mostly removing the hold-down, swapping the battery, and reconnecting safely.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep keys away from the vehicle while working to prevent modules “waking up.”
- ⚠️ Remove metal jewelry and avoid shorting tools between terminals and body metal.
- ⚠️ Battery acid is corrosive; wear gloves and eye protection.
- ⚠️ Always disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect it last.
- ⚠️ If your Renegade has Stop/Start (ESS), it may require an AGM battery and may benefit from a battery reset.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, turn the ignition OFF, and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and let the vehicle sit 5–10 minutes so computers go to sleep.
- If you’re using a memory saver (a device that keeps radio/settings powered during battery swap), connect it now per its instructions.
- Quick check: does your Renegade have a Stop/Start (ESS) button on the dash? If yes, make sure you bought the correct battery type (often AGM).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
- If there’s a plastic battery cover or fresh-air duct in the way, remove it using a trim clip tool and/or 10mm socket (fasteners vary by setup).
Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal (-) first
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist and lift the clamp straight up off the battery post.
- Tip: Tuck the cable aside so it can’t spring back.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal (+)
- Flip open the red terminal cover (if equipped).
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Remove the clamp from the battery post and move it safely aside.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- At the base of the battery, remove the hold-down bolt using a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Set the hold-down bracket and bolt aside where they won’t get lost.
Step 5: Lift out the old battery
- Use a battery strap handle to lift the battery straight up and out.
- Batteries are heavy; lift with your legs, not your back.
Step 6: Clean and prep the terminals
- Use a battery terminal brush to lightly clean the inside of each cable clamp until shiny.
- Install anti-corrosion pads on the new battery posts (one per post).
Step 7: Install the new battery
- Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one (positive and negative in the same positions).
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket and bolt using a 13mm socket.
- Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs)
Step 8: Reconnect the terminals (positive first)
- Install the positive clamp first and tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
- Install the negative clamp last and tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
- Apply a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray after everything is tight.
Step 9: Reinstall any covers/ducts
- Reinstall the battery cover/ducting using the trim clip tool and 10mm socket (as needed).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm the crank is strong and steady.
- Check that the red battery light is OFF on the dash.
- Reset clock and radio presets if you did not use a memory saver.
- If equipped with Stop/Start (ESS): it may take a few drive cycles to relearn and begin working normally.
