š§ HR-V - 12V Battery Replacement
On your HR-V, the 12V battery lives in the engine bay and powers the starter and all electronics. Replacing it is mostly about doing the disconnect/reconnect in the correct order to prevent short circuits and avoid setting unnecessary warning lights.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work with the engine OFF, key away from the vehicle, and let hot parts cool.
- ā ļø Always remove the negative (ā) cable first and install it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
- ā ļø Do not let a tool touch the positive (+) terminal and metal body parts at the same time.
- ā ļø Battery acid is corrosiveāwear gloves and safety glasses.
- ā ļø Battery disconnect is required for this job.
š§ Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" extension (1/4" drive)
- 10mm combination wrench
- Battery terminal brush
- Digital multimeter
- Memory saver (OBD-II) (specialty)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 12V battery (Group Size 51R) - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion felt pads - Qty: 2
- Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and make sure the key fob is at least 10 feet away.
- If you want to keep radio presets and settings, connect a Memory saver (OBD-II) (specialty) before disconnecting the battery. (A memory saver is a small device that supplies backup power through the diagnostic port.)
- Plan for resets after reconnect: clock, and the driverās window auto-up/auto-down may need re-initialization.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
- If a plastic cover or intake duct blocks access on your HR-V, remove the fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative (ā) terminal first
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative (ā) terminal clamp nut.
- Twist the clamp gently and lift it off the battery post.
- Tuck the negative cable end to the side so it cannot spring back onto the post. Negative off first prevents accidental short.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 5 NĀ·m (3.7 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) terminal
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive (+) terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp off the post and move it aside without letting it touch metal body parts.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 5 NĀ·m (3.7 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- Remove the hold-down hardware using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
- Lift off the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 10 NĀ·m (7.4 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Wearing nitrile gloves and safety glasses, lift the battery straight up and out.
- Keep the battery upright to avoid any acid spill.
Step 6: Clean the terminals and prepare for the new battery
- Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the inside of both cable clamps.
- Install battery terminal anti-corrosion felt pads onto the new battery posts (one per post).
- Lightly apply battery terminal protectant spray after everything is tightened (not before).
Step 7: Install the new battery and secure it
- Place the new Group Size 51R battery into the tray with the posts oriented the same as the old one.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
- Torque to 10 NĀ·m (7.4 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect terminals (positive first, negative last)
- Install the positive (+) cable clamp first and tighten using a 10mm wrench.
- Torque to 5 NĀ·m (3.7 ft-lbs).
- Install the negative (ā) cable clamp last and tighten using a 10mm wrench.
- Torque to 5 NĀ·m (3.7 ft-lbs).
- Spray a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray on the connections. Light coat is enough.
Step 9: Verify battery voltage
- Use a digital multimeter across the battery posts.
- With engine OFF, a healthy fully-charged battery is typically around 12.6V.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm no slow cranking and no flickering lights.
- Reset the clock on the center display if needed.
- Power window reset (if auto-up/down stops working): with the engine ON, fully lower the driver window, then fully raise it and keep holding the switch up for 2 seconds.
- Idle re-learn (helps smooth idle after a battery disconnect): start the engine, turn all accessories OFF, and let it idle until the radiator fan cycles on and off twice.
