📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Odyssey on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn off the headlights, climate control, interior lights, and all accessories.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- If using a memory saver OBD-II device, plug it into the OBD-II port under the driver-side dash before disconnecting the battery. A memory saver supplies low backup power to help preserve settings.
- Wait at least 3 minutes after turning the ignition off before disconnecting the battery. This lets control modules go to sleep.
- Note the battery orientation before removal. The positive terminal has a plus sign and usually a red cover.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Battery
- Open the hood and find the battery on the driver-side front area of the engine compartment.
- Use your hands to lift or move any plastic terminal covers out of the way.
- Identify the negative terminal marked - and the positive terminal marked +.
- Take a photo before removing anything.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to loosen the nut on the negative battery cable clamp.
- Twist the clamp gently by hand and lift it off the battery post.
- If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller. A battery terminal puller safely lifts the clamp without damaging the battery post.
- Move the negative cable away from the battery so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.
Step 3: Disconnect the Positive Battery Cable
- Open the red positive terminal cover by hand.
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to loosen the positive battery cable clamp nut.
- Lift the positive cable clamp off the battery post.
- Move the positive cable aside carefully. Do not let it touch metal body parts.
Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down Bracket
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to loosen the hold-down bracket nuts.
- Remove the top hold-down bracket and the J-hooks. J-hooks are the long hooked rods that clamp the battery down.
- Set the bracket, nuts, and hooks aside in the order they came off.
Step 5: Remove the Old Battery
- Use a battery carrier strap to lift the battery straight up and out. A battery carrier strap clips onto the battery and gives you a safe handle.
- Keep the battery upright at all times.
- Place the old battery on cardboard or a stable surface.
- Batteries are heavier than they look.
Step 6: Clean the Battery Tray and Cable Ends
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
- Use the same battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the tray area if light corrosion is present.
- If you see white or green powder, avoid touching it directly. That is battery corrosion.
- Make sure the battery tray is dry and the cable clamps are clean before installing the new battery.
Step 7: Install the New Battery
- Use a battery carrier strap to lower the new battery into the tray.
- Match the terminal positions exactly like the old battery. The positive post must be on the same side as the positive cable.
- Make sure the battery sits flat in the tray and does not rock.
Step 8: Reinstall the Battery Hold-Down Bracket
- Install the J-hooks and top hold-down bracket by hand first.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3/8-inch extension 6-inch to tighten the hold-down nuts evenly.
- Tighten until the battery cannot move by hand. Do not crush the battery case.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
Step 9: Connect the Positive Cable First
- Install one battery terminal anti-corrosion washer onto the positive battery post.
- Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to tighten the clamp nut.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Close the red positive terminal cover by hand.
Step 10: Connect the Negative Cable Last
- Install one battery terminal anti-corrosion washer onto the negative battery post.
- Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to tighten the clamp nut.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- A small spark can happen when reconnecting. That is usually normal.
Step 11: Protect the Terminals
- Use battery terminal protector spray lightly on the battery terminals and clamps.
- Do not soak the area. A light coating is enough.
- Use your hands to confirm both cable clamps are tight and do not rotate on the posts.
Step 12: Check Charging Voltage
- Set a digital multimeter to DC volts. A multimeter measures voltage, and DC volts is the setting used for car batteries.
- Touch the red meter lead to the positive terminal and the black meter lead to the negative terminal.
- With the engine off, a healthy new battery should usually read about 12.4-12.8 volts.
- Start the engine and check again with the digital multimeter.
- With the engine running, charging voltage should usually read about 13.5-14.8 volts.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Odyssey and confirm it cranks strongly.
- Check that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
- Initialize the driver window auto-up/down if it stops working: start the engine, lower the window fully, then raise it fully and hold the switch up for about 2 seconds.
- Drive normally for several miles. Idle quality may relearn after battery power is restored.
- Recycle the old battery at a parts store or battery recycler. Do not throw it in the trash.
