🔧 Tucson - 12V Battery Replacement

This repair replaces the 12-volt starting battery in your Tucson. A weak battery can cause slow cranking, warning lights, no-start issues, and electrical glitches.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Always remove the negative battery cable first to reduce the chance of sparks.
  • ⚠️ Keep metal tools away from both battery posts at the same time. Touching both can cause a short circuit.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Do not tip the battery. Lead-acid batteries are heavy and can leak corrosive acid.
  • ⚠️ Your Tucson does not require battery coding or registration after a standard 12V battery replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch extension 6-inch
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Battery carrier strap
  • Torque wrench 3/8-inch drive
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Tucson on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⏱️ Wait at least 3 minutes before disconnecting the battery so vehicle modules can go to sleep.
  • 🪟 If possible, leave the driver window open before disconnecting the battery in case the doors lock unexpectedly.
  • 📻 Radio presets, clock settings, and auto window memory may reset after the battery is disconnected.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Battery

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin, then open the hood and support it.
  • The battery is in the engine bay on the driver-side front area.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Take a photo before removal.

Step 2: Remove the Negative Battery Cable

  • The negative terminal is marked with a minus sign - and usually has a black cable.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative terminal nut.
  • Twist the terminal gently and lift it off the battery post.
  • If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty). A terminal puller lifts the cable clamp without damaging it.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.

Step 3: Remove the Positive Battery Cable

  • The positive terminal is marked with a plus sign + and usually has a red cover.
  • Lift the red protective cover by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the positive terminal nut.
  • Lift the positive terminal off the battery post and move it aside.
  • Do not let tools touch metal nearby.

Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down Bracket

  • The hold-down bracket keeps the battery from moving while driving.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch extension 6-inch, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt at the base of the battery.
  • Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the Old Battery

  • Attach a battery carrier strap if the battery does not have a built-in handle.
  • Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray using both hands.
  • The battery is heavy, so keep your back straight and lift slowly.
  • Place the old battery upright on the ground.

Step 6: Clean the Battery Tray and Cable Ends

  • Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
  • Clean the battery tray by hand with a shop-safe cloth if dirt or corrosion is present.
  • If you see white or blue powder, that is corrosion. Avoid touching it with bare hands.

Step 7: Install the New Battery

  • Use a battery carrier strap to lower the new battery into the tray.
  • Make sure the positive and negative posts are in the same position as the old battery.
  • Install the hold-down bracket by hand first so the bolt does not cross-thread.
  • Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch extension 6-inch, and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the hold-down bolt to Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The battery case can crack.

Step 8: Connect the Positive Cable First

  • Install one battery terminal felt washer over the positive battery post.
  • Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the positive terminal nut to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Close the red protective cover by hand.

Step 9: Connect the Negative Cable Last

  • Install one battery terminal felt washer over the negative battery post.
  • Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the negative terminal nut to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Apply battery terminal anti-corrosion protectant to both terminals after they are tight.

Step 10: Check Your Work

  • Use your hand to gently wiggle each battery cable. Neither clamp should rotate or lift off.
  • Use your hand to gently move the battery. It should not slide in the tray.
  • Make sure no tools are left in the engine bay.
  • Close the hood securely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Tucson and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • ✅ Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • ✅ If the auto up/down window feature stops working, relearn it by holding the window switch down until fully open, then holding it up until fully closed for 3-5 seconds.
  • ✅ Drive normally for 10-15 minutes so idle and steering angle systems can relearn.
  • ✅ Return the old battery to a parts store or recycling center. Do not throw it in household trash.
