🔧 1500 - 12V Battery Replacement
This procedure replaces the under-hood 12-volt battery in your 1500. The 12V battery powers the starter controls, computers, lights, and accessories, even though your 1500 also has the mild-hybrid eTorque system.

- ⚠️ Your 1500 has a 48V mild-hybrid eTorque system. Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or hybrid components.
- ⚠️ This repair is for the regular 12V battery only, located under the hood.
- ⚠️ Always remove the negative battery cable first and install it last to reduce spark risk.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves. Batteries contain acid and can vent explosive gas.
- ⚠️ Keep metal tools away from both battery terminals at the same time.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your 1500 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn off all lights, HVAC, radio, and accessories.
- Remove the key fob from the truck and keep it at least 15 feet away.
- Open the hood and wait at least 5 minutes so the modules can go to sleep.
- If using a memory saver 12V OBD-II, plug it into the diagnostic port before disconnecting the battery. A memory saver is a small backup power device that helps retain clock, radio, and module memory.
- Do not open doors or press the brake pedal while the battery is disconnected.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the 12V Battery
- Open the hood and locate the 12V battery on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery.
- Identify the negative terminal marked - and the positive terminal marked +.
- Take a photo before removal.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Cable
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp nut.
- Twist the negative cable gently and lift it off the battery post.
- If the terminal is stuck, use a battery terminal puller. A battery terminal puller safely lifts a tight cable clamp without damaging the battery post.
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
Step 3: Disconnect the Positive Cable
- Lift the red protective cover from the positive terminal.
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to loosen the positive battery terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the positive cable off the battery post and move it aside.
- Do not let the positive cable touch metal body parts.
Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down
- Locate the battery hold-down bracket at the base of the battery.
- Use a 10mm socket, ratchet handle, and 6-inch socket extension to remove the hold-down bolt.
- Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
- Do not drop the bolt.
Step 5: Remove the Old Battery
- Attach a battery carrying strap to the battery if the battery does not have a handle.
- Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray. Batteries are heavy, so keep your back straight and use both hands.
- Place the old battery upright on the ground.
- Check the battery tray for acid residue, dirt, or loose hardware.
Step 6: Clean the Battery Cable Ends
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
- Also clean the battery tray area if dirt or corrosion is present.
- Do not use water near open electrical connectors.
- Clean metal makes better contact.
Step 7: Install the New Battery
- Use a battery carrying strap to lower the new 12V AGM battery into the tray.
- Make sure the positive post is on the same side as the positive cable.
- Reinstall the hold-down bracket using the 10mm socket, ratchet handle, and 6-inch socket extension.
- Tighten the hold-down securely. Do not over-tighten and crack the battery case.
Step 8: Connect the Positive Cable First
- Install one battery terminal anti-corrosion washer on the positive post.
- Push the positive cable fully down onto the positive battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the terminal clamp nut.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Close the red protective cover over the positive terminal.
Step 9: Connect the Negative Cable Last
- Install one battery terminal anti-corrosion washer on the negative post.
- Push the negative cable fully down onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the terminal clamp nut.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Apply battery terminal protector spray lightly to both terminals after tightening.
Step 10: Wake Up the Truck
- If you used a memory saver 12V OBD-II, unplug it now.
- Close the hood enough to latch it, then enter the truck.
- Start your 1500 and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Use the touchscreen to reset the clock if needed through Apps > Settings > Clock.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm the engine starts normally without slow cranking.
- ✅ Check that the battery warning light turns off after startup.
- ✅ Verify windows, locks, radio, and HVAC controls work normally.
- ✅ Turn the steering wheel fully left and right if stability or steering warnings appear, then drive straight for a short distance.
- ✅ Recheck both battery terminals after one short drive. They should not twist by hand.
- ✅ Recycle the old battery at a parts store or battery recycler.
