🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Battery
- Use the interior hood release, then open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
- The battery is in the engine bay on the driver-side front area.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery.
- Take a photo before removal.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Cable
- Find the negative terminal marked with a minus sign, -.
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket with 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative cable clamp nut.
- Twist the cable gently and lift it off the battery post.
- If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller. A terminal puller lifts the clamp straight up without damaging the battery post.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery.
Step 3: Disconnect the Positive Cable
- Open the red protective cover on the positive terminal marked with a plus sign, +.
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket with 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the positive cable clamp nut.
- Lift the positive cable off the battery post.
- Keep the positive cable away from metal body parts.
Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down
- The hold-down bracket keeps the battery from moving while driving.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen the two hold-down nuts.
- Remove the top hold-down bracket and set it aside.
- Do not drop the J-hooks into the engine bay.
Step 5: Remove the Old Battery
- Use a battery carrying strap if the battery does not have a handle. A battery carrying strap helps lift the heavy battery safely.
- Lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
- Keep it upright the entire time.
- Place it on the ground in a safe upright position.
- Batteries are heavier than they look.
Step 6: Clean the Battery Tray and Cable Ends
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps.
- Use the same battery terminal cleaning brush to clean light corrosion from the battery tray area.
- If corrosion is heavy, avoid touching it with bare hands and clean carefully while wearing gloves and safety glasses.
Step 7: Install the New Battery
- Confirm the new battery posts are positioned the same way as the old battery.
- Use a battery carrying strap to lower the new battery straight into the tray.
- Make sure the battery sits flat and does not rock.
- Install one battery terminal anti-corrosion washer on each battery post.
Step 8: Reinstall the Battery Hold-Down
- Place the hold-down bracket back over the battery.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to tighten both hold-down nuts evenly.
- Tighten only until the battery is secure and cannot slide.
- Torque to 3.5-5 Nm (31-44 in-lbs)
- Do not overtighten. Too much force can crack the battery case.
Step 9: Connect the Positive Cable First
- Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket with 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the clamp nut.
- Torque to 5-6 Nm (44-53 in-lbs)
- Close the red protective cover over the positive terminal.
Step 10: Connect the Negative Cable Last
- Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket with 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the clamp nut.
- Torque to 5-6 Nm (44-53 in-lbs)
- A small spark may happen when the cable touches the post. This can be normal.
Step 11: Protect the Terminals
- Use battery terminal protectant spray on the clean, tightened terminals.
- Spray lightly around the clamps and posts.
- Do not soak nearby wiring or connectors.
Step 12: Start and Check Operation
- Remove the OBD-II memory saver if you used one.
- Start the engine normally.
- Check that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- Use your hands only after shutdown to gently confirm the battery does not move.

- ✅ Let your Forester idle for a few minutes so the control modules can stabilize.
- ✅ Reset the clock and radio presets if they were lost.
- ✅ Auto window function may need relearning: close the driver window fully, hold the switch up for about 2 seconds, then test auto-up and auto-down.
