This procedure replaces the 12-volt auxiliary battery in your RAV4 Hybrid. The 12-volt battery powers the computers, locks, lights, and startup electronics; it does not crank the engine like a normal gas-only vehicle.

- ⚠️ Your RAV4 is a hybrid. Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or high-voltage components.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground and shift to Park.
- Press the POWER button off and keep the key fob at least 15 feet away.
- Wait at least 5 minutes before disconnecting the battery so control modules can go to sleep.
- If using a memory saver, plug it into the OBD-II port before disconnecting the battery. A memory saver is a small backup power device that helps keep radio presets and learned settings alive.
- Open the rear liftgate before disconnecting the battery. The power liftgate may not work once power is removed.
- Make sure the replacement battery is an AGM type. AGM means absorbed glass mat, a sealed battery design used by many hybrid vehicles.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the 12-volt battery
- Open the rear liftgate.
- Use your hands to lift the rear cargo floor panel.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any cargo trim clips covering the battery access area.
- Locate the 12-volt battery in the rear cargo area, typically on the passenger-side rear corner under the floor trim.
- Take a photo before disassembly.
Step 2: Identify the battery terminals
- Find the negative terminal marked with a minus sign -.
- Find the positive terminal marked with a plus sign + and usually covered by a red protective cover.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery cables.
Step 3: Disconnect the negative cable first
- Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist the cable clamp gently by hand and lift it off the battery post.
- If it is stuck, use a battery terminal puller. A battery terminal puller safely lifts a tight cable clamp without damaging the battery post.
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
Step 4: Disconnect the positive cable
- Open the red positive terminal cover by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the positive cable clamp off the battery post.
- Move the positive cable aside carefully.
- Do not touch body metal with tools.
Step 5: Remove the battery hold-down
- Use a 12mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove or loosen the battery hold-down bracket fasteners.
- Lift the hold-down bracket away and set it aside.
- Keep the bracket and fasteners together so they are easy to reinstall.
Step 6: Remove the old battery
- Use both hands to lift the battery straight up and out of the tray.
- Keep the battery upright at all times.
- Batteries are heavy, so lift with your legs and avoid bending your back.
- Inspect the battery tray for corrosion or loose debris.
Step 7: Clean the cable terminals
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of each cable clamp.
- Use the same brush to lightly clean the new battery posts if needed.
- Do not remove too much metal. Just make the contact surfaces bright and clean.
Step 8: Install the new battery
- Place the new 12-volt AGM auxiliary battery into the tray in the same direction as the old battery.
- Make sure the positive post is on the same side as the positive cable.
- Install the battery hold-down bracket by hand first.
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the hold-down fasteners to Torque to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the bracket.
Step 9: Connect the positive cable first
- Place an anti-corrosion washer over the positive battery post.
- Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the positive terminal clamp nut to Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Close the red positive terminal cover by hand.
Step 10: Connect the negative cable last
- Place an anti-corrosion washer over the negative battery post.
- Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the negative terminal clamp nut to Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- A small spark may occur when the terminal touches the post. This can be normal because modules wake up.
Step 11: Protect the terminals
- Use battery terminal protector spray on the installed cable clamps.
- Do not spray inside open electrical connectors.
- Make sure the positive terminal cover is fully seated.
Step 12: Reinstall the cargo trim
- Use your hands to position the cargo trim panels back into place.
- Use the trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall any removed trim clips.
- Lower the rear cargo floor panel.
✅ After Repair
- Press the brake pedal and press the POWER button. Confirm the READY light appears on the dash.
- Check that the clock, windows, locks, interior lights, and liftgate operate normally.
- If the auto up/down window feature does not work, initialize each window: hold the switch down until fully open, then hold it up until fully closed, and keep holding for about 2 seconds.
- If warning lights appear, drive your RAV4 normally for a short trip. Some systems may relearn after battery power is restored.
- Recycle the old battery at a battery retailer or parts store. Do not throw it in household trash.
