🔧 Forte - 12-Volt Battery Replacement
Replacing the battery involves disconnecting the old battery, removing its lower retaining bracket, and installing a correctly sized replacement. Your Forte does not require battery registration or programming after replacement.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Wear safety glasses and gloves. A battery contains corrosive acid and can produce flammable gas.
- Switch off the ignition, lights, fan, and all accessories before disconnecting the battery.
- Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last. This reduces the chance of an electrical short.
- Do not let a tool touch the positive terminal and any metal body component simultaneously.
- Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
- The battery is heavy. Lift it upright with both hands and do not tip it.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Forte on level ground, select 1st gear, engage the parking brake, and remove the key.
- Open the hood and wait at least three minutes for the vehicle’s electronics to shut down.
- Record saved radio stations if desired. The clock and some audio settings may reset.
- Check that the replacement battery has the same dimensions, terminal positions, and hold-down lip as the original Group 124R battery.
- No scan tool, battery registration, or infotainment service mode is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate and inspect the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery on the driver’s side of the engine compartment.
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the battery.
- Look for swelling, cracks, or leaking fluid. If the case is damaged, do not tilt or handle it without professional assistance.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal
- Identify the negative terminal by its minus symbol and black cable.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist the clamp gently while lifting it from the battery post. Position the cable where it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Negative comes off first and goes on last.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal
- Lift the red protective cover from the positive terminal.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the positive clamp straight off the post. Do not pull on the cable or disturb the attached fuse assembly.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down
- The hold-down is the small bracket securing the lower edge of the battery. It prevents the battery from moving while driving.
- Use the 12mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt and bracket at the base of the battery.
- Place the bolt and bracket somewhere clean so they are not lost.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Fit the battery lifting strap securely around the battery.
- Use the lifting strap to raise the battery straight upward with both hands. Keep it upright.
- Set the battery on a stable, acid-resistant surface away from children, flames, and metal objects.
Step 6: Inspect the tray and terminals
- Check the battery tray and hold-down bracket for corrosion, cracks, or loose hardware.
- Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside of both cable clamps until the contact surfaces are free of corrosion.
- Do not install the battery if the tray or hold-down cannot secure it firmly.
Step 7: Install the replacement battery
- Use the battery lifting strap to lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the same positions as the original battery.
- Make sure the bottom edge of the battery sits fully inside the tray guides.
- Reinstall the lower hold-down bracket and bolt by hand.
- Use the 12mm socket, 6-inch extension, and torque wrench to tighten the hold-down bolt to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).
- Confirm the battery cannot slide or rock. Do not overtighten the bracket against the plastic case.
Step 8: Connect the positive terminal
- Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal clamp nut to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant after the connection is tight.
- Close the red positive-terminal cover.
Step 9: Connect the negative terminal
- Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal clamp nut to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant after the connection is tight.
- Check both clamps by hand. Neither clamp should rotate on its post.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally without battery or charging-system warning lights.
- Set the clock and restore any radio presets that were lost.
- Confirm the windows, locks, lights, and audio system operate correctly.
- Turn the steering wheel slowly from center toward each side if the electronic steering warning remains illuminated after startup. The warning should clear after a short drive.
- Return the old battery to a battery retailer or authorized recycling center. Do not place it in household waste.
- Recheck the battery hold-down and terminal clamps after several days of driving.
