- 📸 Take a photo of the battery orientation and cable routing before removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate and Inspect the Battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery on the driver’s side of the engine compartment.
- Use safety glasses and mechanic gloves before handling the battery.
- Confirm that the replacement battery matches the original case size, post orientation, and terminal type.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Terminal
- Identify the negative terminal by the minus symbol and black cable.
- Use a 10mm combination wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist the clamp gently and lift it straight off the post. Move it aside where it cannot spring back.
- Do not pull or pry on the cable itself.
Step 3: Disconnect the Positive Terminal
- Lift the red protective cover from the positive terminal.
- Use a 10mm combination wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the clamp from the post and position it away from the battery.
- Never bridge positive power to body metal.
Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down
- The hold-down is the metal bar that prevents the battery from moving.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to loosen and remove the hold-down fasteners.
- Remove the hold-down bar while noting its position and hook orientation.
- Place the fasteners somewhere safe so they do not fall into the engine compartment.
Step 5: Remove the Old Battery
- Fit the battery lifting strap securely around the battery.
- Lift the battery straight upward with both hands. Keep it upright to prevent acid leakage.
- Remove the plastic insulating jacket or tray insert if it remains attached to the old battery. It must be transferred to the replacement battery when originally equipped.
Step 6: Clean and Inspect the Battery Tray
- Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to remove light corrosion from the inside of both cable clamps.
- Inspect the tray, cables, and clamps for cracks, severe corrosion, or loose connections.
- Do not install the new battery if a cable clamp is cracked or cannot tighten securely.
Step 7: Install the New Battery
- Transfer the original insulating jacket to the replacement battery if equipped.
- Use the battery lifting strap to lower the new battery into the tray with the terminals in the original orientation.
- Make sure the battery sits flat and no cables are trapped underneath it.
Step 8: Reinstall the Hold-Down
- Position the hold-down bar exactly as it was originally installed.
- Start the fasteners by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the hold-down fasteners evenly to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Push the battery firmly by hand. It must not slide or rock.
- Do not crush the plastic battery case.
Step 9: Connect the Positive Terminal
- Install the positive cable clamp fully onto the positive post first.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant after the connection is tight.
- Close the red protective cover over the positive terminal.
Step 10: Connect the Negative Terminal
- Install the negative cable clamp fully onto the negative post last.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant after tightening.
- Gently try to rotate both clamps by hand. Neither clamp should move.
Step 11: Check Battery Voltage
- Set the digital multimeter to 20 volts DC. DC means the direct-current setting used for automotive batteries.
- Place the red probe on the positive post and the black probe on the negative post.
- A fully charged battery at rest should normally read approximately 12.6 volts.
- Start the engine and check again. Typical charging voltage is approximately 13.5-14.8 volts.
✅ After Repair
- 🚗 Start the engine and confirm that it cranks normally and no battery warning light remains on.
- 🪟 Reinitialize any automatic window that lost its one-touch function: close the window completely, then hold the switch in the upward position for about one second.
- 🕒 Reset the clock and restore saved audio settings if necessary.
- ⚠️ Some warning lights may appear immediately after reconnecting power. Start the engine, turn the steering wheel smoothly from lock to lock, center it, and drive a short distance. If a warning remains, have the system scanned.
- 🔍 Recheck that the battery cannot move and both terminal clamps remain secure.
- ♻️ Return the old lead-acid battery to a battery retailer or authorized recycler. Do not place it in household waste.
