🔧 Wrangler - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each taillight housing, twist out the bulb sockets, and swap in new bulbs. On your Wrangler, the red section bulb handles tail/stop/turn, and the clear section bulb is the reverse light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸 Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🔸 Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot right after use.
- 🔸 Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- 🔸 Support the taillight housing as you pull it out to avoid paint scratches.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Taillight bulb (stop/turn/tail, 3157 type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Reverse light bulb (3156 type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the tailgate for easier access to the taillight screws.
- Lay a towel on the bumper corner to protect paint while you work.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the taillight housing (one side)
- Use a Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the two taillight mounting screws (accessible with the tailgate open).
- Hold the housing with your other hand so it doesn’t drop or scratch the paint.
- Pull the taillight housing straight rearward to release the locator pins. If it’s stuck, use a trim/panel removal tool to gently help it pop free. Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 2: Remove the bulb sockets
- Locate the two twist-lock bulb sockets on the back of the housing.
- Use your hand (or a nitrile glove for grip) to rotate each socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise, then pull it out.
- The larger red-lens bulb socket is typically the stop/turn/tail (3157); the clear-lens bulb socket is the reverse (3156).
Step 3: Replace the bulbs
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean, dry cloth before installing.
Step 4: Test the lights before reassembly
- Reinsert each socket into the housing and twist clockwise to lock by hand.
- Turn on the parking lights to verify the tail lights illuminate.
- Press the brake pedal (have a helper watch) to verify brake lights.
- Turn on the hazard flashers to verify turn signals.
- With the clutch in and parking brake set, shift to reverse briefly (key on) to verify reverse lights. Use a flashlight if needed to see clearly in daylight.
Step 5: Reinstall the taillight housing
- Align the housing locator pins with the body grommets, then push the housing straight in until it seats.
- Install the two screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the opposite taillight so bulbs are replaced in pairs.
âś… After Repair
- Re-check: tail lights, brake lights, hazards/turn signals, and reverse lights.
- Make sure both housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
- If a new bulb doesn’t work, re-check the socket is fully twisted/locked and the bulb is fully seated.
