🔧 Patriot - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each rear lamp housing, twist out the bulb socket, and swap in new bulbs. This is a quick job, but taking care with the plastic lamp pins and not touching the glass helps prevent broken parts and early bulb failure.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can burn you right after use.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the lamp housing as you pull it out so you don’t crack the lens or bend the locating pins.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Trim clip removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Taillight bulb (dual-filament, 3157) - Qty: 2
Assumption: You’re replacing the main stop/turn/taillamp bulb on both sides; other rear bulbs (reverse/marker) replace the same way but may use a different bulb number.
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the light switch to OFF and make sure the rear lamps are not hot.
- Open the liftgate to access the taillamp retaining screws.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the left taillamp screws
- Open the liftgate.
- Locate the two Phillips screws on the inboard edge of the left taillamp (near the liftgate opening).
- Use a small flashlight if needed to see the screw heads clearly.
Step 2: Remove the left taillamp housing
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws.
- Pull the taillamp housing straight rearward to release it from the body pins (it may “pop” free).
- If it feels stuck, use a trim clip removal tool gently at the edge to help start it moving.
- Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Identify the main taillight bulb socket (usually the larger socket for the stop/turn/taillamp bulb).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it out of the housing.
- Wear nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new 3157 bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth (with gloves on).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp (left side)
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
- Line up the lamp housing locating pins with the body holes and press the housing straight in until fully seated.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) (snug only; do not overtighten plastic).
Step 6: Repeat on the right side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 on the right taillamp assembly using the Phillips #2 screwdriver, trim clip removal tool, and nitrile gloves.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and confirm both taillights illuminate.
- Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) and confirm both brake lights work.
- Turn on the hazards and confirm both rear turn signals flash normally (not “hyper-flashing”).
- Make sure both lamp housings sit flush with the body and don’t wiggle.
