🔧 Forte - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the rear light bulbs by accessing the bulb sockets from inside the trunk (and, for the trunk-lid lights, behind the trunk lid trim). This restores proper tail/brake/turn/reverse lighting and keeps you legal and safe at night.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Replacing the standard rear bulbs (outer quarter-panel lamp and inner trunk-lid lamp) by matching the bulb number printed on your old bulbs.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF, remove the key, and make sure lights are OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool if they were recently on (they can burn you).
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching a new glass bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the trunk lid so it can’t drop while you’re working.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension (1/4" drive)
- Flashlight
- Torque wrench (inch-pound or small Nm) (specialty)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear bulb(s) to match your existing bulb number - Qty: 2-4
- Trunk trim retainer clips - Qty: 2-6
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can reach the side trunk liners.
- Have your replacement bulbs ready and compare them to the old ones (same base and same number printed on the bulb).
- A “trim removal tool” is a plastic pry tool that pops clips out without scratching panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the outer taillight bulb area (quarter-panel lights)
- Use a flashlight to look into both rear corners of the trunk.
- Pull back the trunk side lining near the taillight (some cars have a small access flap; if clipped, use a plastic trim removal tool to pop clips gently).
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket from the taillight housing
- Find the round bulb socket(s) going into the back of the taillight.
- Grip the socket and rotate it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand, then pull it straight out.
- Tip: Turn gently; don’t force it.
Step 3: Replace the bulb (outer taillight)
- Remove the old bulb from the socket:
- If it’s a push-in style: pull straight out.
- If it’s a twist-lock style: push in slightly and rotate counterclockwise, then pull out.
- Install the new bulb that matches the number printed on the old bulb.
- If the new bulb is glass, use nitrile gloves to keep it clean.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and repeat on the other side
- Insert the socket back into the housing, making sure the tabs line up.
- Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Repeat Steps 1-4 for the other outer taillight.
Step 5: If your “taillight bulbs” are on the trunk lid, access the inner lamp bulbs
- Look at the trunk lid trim panel (the liner on the inside of the trunk lid).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop out the plastic push clips.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 if any screws are present.
- Lower the trim panel enough to reach the bulb sockets for the trunk-lid lamps.
Step 6: Replace trunk-lid lamp bulbs (if equipped)
- Remove the bulb socket by twisting counterclockwise by hand.
- Replace the bulb by matching the number on the old bulb.
- Reinstall the socket by twisting clockwise until locked.
Step 7: Optional: Remove the full taillight assembly only if you can’t remove sockets
- If a socket won’t come out due to space or damage, remove the lamp fasteners from inside the trunk using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Carefully pull the lamp straight outward (don’t pry the paint).
- Reinstall and tighten fasteners: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound or small Nm) (specialty).
Step 8: Reinstall trunk liners and trim
- Reposition the trunk side liners and press clips back in by hand.
- Reinstall trunk-lid trim clips (replace any broken ones).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine off is fine) and test:
- Tail lights (parking lights ON)
- Brake lights (press brake pedal)
- Turn signals and hazard lights
- Reverse lights (foot on brake, shift to R)
- If a bulb doesn’t work, remove it and re-seat it fully, then confirm you matched the bulb number and base type.
- Make sure all sockets are fully locked to keep water out of the housing.
